Best .310 cadet velocity?

What is the best velocity range for a .310 cadet using the 120gr heeled bullet? I'm using 3.5grs of unique and getting 960fps but at 100 yards I'm not getting any nice groups more like patterns. It's got me wondering if it's the load or maybe my eyes and those sights?

I would try upping things a bit with some slower burning powder such as 2400, 1680, RL-7, etc.

Your bullets fit your bore correctly?

I found a happy spot with 4.6 - 5.0 grs of N340, which shoots to the sights and at about the factory MV figures, as it shoots to the sight settings.
I do use pretty hard lead, BTW - WW's.  bullets cast  from the CBE 120gr mould, a perfect fit both for the fired case and the groove diameter.

I'm going to check the bore diameter again but I know the sights were on the right settings for 200 and at 50 it's great but something about 100 is just not right. The other thing I'm going to try is bullets that are a lot harder.

I believe the factory ammo with the 120gr heeled bullet had a MV of 1200 fps.

Yes the spec mv is 1200 fps but the lead I  used in my first attempts was to soft for that kind of speed.

The .310 cartridges in my collection have pretty soft lead bullets. 1200fps isn't too fast for soft lead and no gas check if the bullet fits properly. In fact, IMO, softer is better.

I got a chance to try some harder bullets with the same powder charge and it was a noticeable difference at 100 and 200 yards. I think I'm going to try some real hard ones and see what happens.
