.22 rim fire Winchesters

I see there are quite a few comments about the problems of extracting fired cases in the Winchester highwall and lowwall.  I have a flat spring highwall with a #4 -octagon 30" barrel which kicks empty out with force to hit the tang sight.  I also owned a lowwall with a kicking extractor.  Is this feature uncommon?

I am no expert but it was common on Winder muskets. The receivers have the necessary cutout for the eject spring. I have a low wall and had a high wall that did not have the cutout but had been rebarreled to .22 rf

I have a low wall center fire, thick side that has the taped hole and the cut out for the ejector spring. Does any one offer or make the parts to enable the ejector function? I took a close look at the front of my receiver and best guess is it never had that feature installed.

I have a 22 bpcr built on a high wall action which has a kicking extractor/ejector. It's a great shooter and has a .22 Green Mountain barrel on it with a custom chamber which is tight. It works well by extracting and ejecting empty .22's. But there's a caveat. If I use ammunition that has a waxy lubricant like Ely, after about 30-40 shots, they start sticking and I have to pull them out with my fingers. If I stay with the ammunition that has an oily lube like SK or Lapua, they work just fine. There are two types of extractor/ejctors on walls. The earlier one is a strong short machined spring that goes through the face of the receiver and passes through a hole on the side. The later ones were a bent spring that attached the same way. You can find them on eBay fairly often but be careful, there's one on there right now for sale that is broken. Stay away from it.

I ended up doing a google search for the ejector and it turns out that DZ arms offers the ejector. They don't offer the screw but am guessing that can be sourced some place else. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I have a coil spring Hiwall action that I removed from a musket and installed a Douglas barrel, I don’t remember an ejector, is it just my failing memory or did some not have ejectors? I seem to remember it was chambered for 22 short. Ditto on the waxed bullets.

While I fully admit to knowing very little about 1885's I do know there are folks out there with KWAM  (knowledge way above me) that can give more info on the ejectors in the actions. I would venture a guess is they made some with and some with out.  I am also pretty sure that the ejector may have been an option. My low wall is a 38 wcf and it is made to have an ejector but my guess is that one was never installed. There is no marks on the receiver face of a screw ever been installed or if it was, it was removed very early in the rifles life well before any removal or corrosion could prove it was ever there.  Anyway , here is is a pic of the receiver face showing the screw hole and ejector spring slot.  If my guesses are wrong I hope someone will take the time to educate me.

Do all ejector models use the same extractor? I see there were more than one shape of extractor used.

I checked my high walls yesterday for the presence of the extractor hole and screw hole.  Most of these have been re-barrelled at some point in time so the caliber is not necessarily relevant.  All originals are noted. There are two shapes of the hole, one is a small square and the other is larger with a dome on 'top" I believe the square ones were for the flat spring ejector.

3 low walls.  All square small hole. One is a 32-20 but it has no ejector.  It appears to be all original

3 coli spring high walls.  All have dome hole.  One is an original Winder.  One is a Winder model 3 action with walls cut down to look like a low wall.

1 flat spring high wall.  Square hole

9 flat spring high walls with no hole.

I've got a Low Wall that Steve Baldwin put a 22LR liner in for me as the barrel was screwed up anyway, when I got it back from him he told me the ejector spring was broke and DZarms had them so the rifle would extract the case but not eject it, got a new spring from DZ and works like a charm now.

Sam,
Yes, your action is setup for the ejector system.  Two things need to happen before it will work, first the spring with a screw needs to be added and a slight recess may need to be cut in the barrel for clearance on the "L" shaped spring.  Second, make sure your extractor has the hump on it for the spring to react with.  DZ makes a two piece extractor and the arm has that hump, installed correctly it works well.  A few of the original HW/LW's extractors are configured this way and they are usually the extractor that is installed across the bottom half of the barrel face.  If it's a 9 o'clock extractor I don't recall many originals having the hump that makes this function work.  I've made a few but the two piece sliding system has won out on my projects.

the low wall I took pics of is a 38-40 wcf. it will eject the case out of the chamber if you work the lever smartly.
My other LW is currently being built. Its a RF action will havae a GM barrel and the DZ extractor system. If I have to pull a case out by finger I don't think that will be much of a problem.  If it turns into a problem I will get and install the ejector system. Nice to know the barrel may need a little work to get things working.  The barrel I am having installed  will be .930 or so across the flats  hoping it all turns out well and turns into a good shooter.
