electric "noise reducers" for complete idiots

As stated in my post regarding digital scale woes, my RCBS chargemaster is on a line with my furnace and a few other devices and I dont have any real good alternatives as far as outlets go, ( I have a call in to my electrician to have a dedicated line put in).
At this point I want to try the noise reduction device as recommended in that post, I want to try the Palomar-Engineers DC Cable noise filter for 2 gauge and smaller. the instructions say to put both positive and negative cables together through the filter . I just have the power cord that goes from my scale to the outlet. I assume that if I wrap that around the filter as shown in the picture, that's all I need to do. Is that correct?
Thanks,
Joe

I don't have a clue what you are talking about. What noise and what picture?

Wes,
I don't see any pictures either, that's a common problem. The noise Joe is talking about is Line Noise.
"Line noise is a term that describes random electrical fluctuations that can occur in power lines or communications links. It can manifest as variations in voltage, frequency, or waveform."

Grin Grin Grin It's a term real common with "one wire folks" not us knuckle draggers. Wink

Oh, that kind of noise. Thanks Greg.

For the picture see Marlinguys Jan12 post with the link under the topic digital scale woes
I would post it here but I am doing this on my phone and don’t know how to paste the link

Ignore the DC reference in that ad. It's just a coil and for AC like your scale you simply wrap the cord the same way. DC wont have anything to do with your scale.

Ferrites, and/or capacitors ...

Find someone who *knows* how they work. I'm clueless beyond what I just wrote.

Maybe an inverter that takes DC from a battery?

Adding: we have a 'Jumpstart' battery with an AC inverter built in. Wasn't horribly expensive, and can do far more than running your scale in an emergency.

Called RCBS
They said there is no reason I should not be able to use an extension cord so I ran one from the scale to the only outlet in the entire house that doesn’t have anything else on it
Tested it and it worked fine
Also ordered a noise filter so we will see how that goes
Thanks everyone!

You could have one or more of the following problems:

1.  Noise induced back into the AC line from one or more of the loads (motors, etc) powered on that circuit.  Many newer appliances use motors with electronic commutators in them that induce a lot of electrical noise back into the AC line.

2.  Line voltage fluctuations when the loads come on line, possibly caused by undersized wire gauge to the load.

3.  Common mode noise, from an external source, such as a nearby radio transmitter.  Common mode noise is electrical noise that appears on both the + and - conductors at the same time and at the same amplitude.

The ferrite toroid type filter, used as shown, will only help with #3 above, the case where there is common mode noise.  It won't help with #1 or #2.  You can get inline AC filters that will help with #1 and #3.  AC outlet strips, ones that claim to include surge protection, often have line filtering included.  This is also something to try.

Also, if you have a battery backup unit, a UPS, like what are used for computers, that would help with all three issues.  It's also likely cheaper that hiring an electrician.  If you have one you can spare for a trial, it's worth a try.

I'm a retired electrical engineer, and a Ham Radio operator.  It's really depressing to discover how many devices around the house generate a LOT of electrical noise.  And the manufacturers don't give a hoot about it. Angry

Is it somewhat ironic that single shot afficionados are resorting to such modern conviences as electronic scales? A good balance beam will do. 😀

I suggest a decent UPS as they will have filters on them.  Or run it directly from a battery.  My RCBS scale uses 12v DC which is the output of the cheesy little power supply it comes with.  Those are, in general, really crappy BTW.

I specify these at work.   We have a very high level of noise on the AC lines (20 volt spikes is common). The SOLAs I have checked with an oscilloscope have been a steady DC voltage output.  Other power supply's are not as good.

The downside is you need to mount them in a electical box.
