33/30 Maynard

A nice start to the new year. Today I shot the recently finished 33/30 Maynard barrel on my 44 1/2. It is the 35/30 Maynard necked to 33cal. BRC barrel, 1:15 twist, 30” long. Bullet was a Paul Jones 33/40 mold that I had to open up the base band to .340”. After 6-8 shots at 100 to chrono a load around 1450fps, and 3 at 200 for scope adjustment, I went for group. These are the first (2) groups. The ID of the black circle is 1.5”. Not a bad start! This should be a fun one…..

Not yet Frank. Those were the first shots tried out of the new barrel. Spent most of today moving snow, including the shooting lane. Looks like we might see some sun Wednesday at the earliest.

Mike, did you make the case on the .400 case head and is it 1.6 or 1.63 long?

Frank,
I did swage down the brass for my 35/30 Maynard to .400” at the base to be authentic. I did not do that on this 33/30 version. I used new 32/40ww brass and then trimmed to 1.620”. I only made (8) cases. The chamber, dies and caseholder were all taper bored in the lathe. .362” Neck and throat cut with a Manson modified reamer.

If time and sunlight allows, I will chrono a couple other powders tomorrow for 1450fps. I have not been completely satisfied with 300MP but will try some tomorrow. MOST of my collapsed cases in several calibers have been with 300MP.
