Barrel Inscriptions etc

Print Post
I posted this information in the general category as well.  There is a gunsmith here in Fallon that does the inscriptions on barrel flats, tangs, and sporting model 6 line patent dates on the left side of RB sporting receivers for me.  He has the correct fonts , sizes etc.   RB fans know how weak the sporting model 6 line inscriptions typically are on the left sidewall. I can now polish a receiver and know the inscription can be restored.  If you are looking for that kind of service you might consider contacting him.  Paul Hampton, 775-294-5300.

Thanks Kenn!
I have a Hepburn I had to have rebarreled and it needs the original E. Remington & Sons put back on. Does he do that also?

Here is a shot of some of the work he has done for me. Test plate with examples.  I have several Hepburns from which he can copy should that be necessary.

Guessing you want a receiver marking for a Ballard since they had no barrel markings?

Yes.  He can do other makers inscriptions.  It does require an example of the original markings.  If not in hand, then good photos and very accurate measurements might work.
If I have an example of the particular firearm I am willing to provide it to assist.

When you say "inscription" do you mean he engraves these or he makes or has the roll stamps?

It is beautiful work, and his prices are reasonable too. Shipping back and forth for a barrel will likely cost more than his engraving does!
I have a Schoyen Ballard that someone cut a dovetail right through the DENVER COLO stamp and when I restored it I filled the dovetail, but would love to get the missing letters returned without doing the rest of Schoyen's stamp. I might give him a call and ask if he can cut a few letters vs. the whole stamp.

Nice!  So he can do just about anything.

The "Fallon" in your location is Fallon NV?

Hi everyone, I'm Paul Hampton.

To answer a few questions:

Yes, I'm in Fallon, NV

I am laser engraving these markings, which some people shy away from because they've seen the rough markings on new firearms. I am employing a method that leaves a nice smooth engraving.

Yes, I can do virtually any marking, provided that I have a clear reference example of what's being reproduced. That's not limited to text either.

Yes, I can fill in missing sections of stamps. Again, a reference is needed. Deepening existing markings is a quite a bit more tricky and should be considered a case-by-case basis.

You don't need to ship the entire rifle, I only need the barreled action, or just the part you need engraved.

I also offer a host of other gunsmithing services, so if you need something, feel free to reach out. I mostly do lever actions, bolt actions, and Ruger No. 1's, but am diving deeper into the older designs that are popular here, thanks to Kenn.

P.S. Once I get some photos scaled down, I'll get some examples posted.

Outstanding and thanks for posting to the OP!

I’d like to replace a barrel on a Marlin 1894 TKD in 25-20 with a new old-stock Badger blank I have.     But then again roll-stamp for another I’m having done has proved a nightmare to get completed.   I would not travel that road twice.

Best Regards,
John

I have just seen this post, here in Australia it would be considered fraud to mark a replacement bbl with "so called" original markings, do other collectors share my thoughts, or is there no care for authencitity? I have a spare Low Wall 25-20SS with a really bad bbl, intend to get it re-lined then re-sell as a "shooter", but not original.Am I being too pedantic? david a.

I can see how some might be mislead by unscrupulous sellers of rebuilt, or faked firearms, but most collectors can easily tell a laser engraved or hand engraved rollstamp over real rollstamps. So I for one have no problem with this and will likely have it done in the future.
When I have a new barrel installed on a nice old gun I'd like it to look as close to what I took off the gun. It's more a case of doing a proper restoration than fraud or misleading a buyer.
I collect Ballard rifles and their barrels are never stamped with the Marlin rollstamp. So if I rebarrel one and leave it unmarked am I misleading people who don't know it's been rebarreled?

Apologies for the delay, long hours in the shop these days.

These are hard to photograph, but I think these will work.
