Another interesting Rolling Block (Read 2532 times)

	This is a RB#1 sporter in 44-77 that I believe has never been shot or if it has was very little. Still has what appears to be old original grease. Very early serial #15xx. 30" heavy barrel. Special order sling swivels and sights. Breech block shows no indication of brass around the firing pin hole. Very cool old buffalo gun.

	I have real mixed emotions about shooting this rifle, I don't suppose it would hurt but it's been sitting my safe for a long time staring at me. I have loaded some ammo for it both of my 44-77s but I keep saying I have lots of other guns to shoot.

	Being that Minty I fully understand the mixed feelings on shooting it. What I do think would be very interesting would be a chamber cast of the neck/throat area and the bore and grove diameters. You often see those sizes listed from well used rifles and they seem to be all over the place. I often wonder if those differences are due to wear or if they were actually made to those sizes. All of that being said. You most for sure have a valuable treasure in that old roller. Sam

	Can you post a couple of photos of the rear sight combination?

	If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

	First time I saw a Rolling Block with two rear sights I figured someone added one of them. Then over time I saw more and more, and realized it was likely done by Remington since there just couldn't be that many where guys added an extra rear sight. I have about 20 Remingtons and not a single one has two rear sights though. If I ever see one for sale reasonably I'll probably buy it just so I have a Roller with two rear sights!

	Kind of looks like more wear on the rough and ready sight than the rest of the gun. Original owner must have liked moving it up and down.

	OleBS, that's a great RB sporter. Could you post a photo of the front sling loop under the barrel? I have a similar RB sporter with a slot for a sling loop & I'd like to see the setup. Thanks. Spud

	Thx OBS. I have struggled with the MVA copy of the combination sight on a couple of rollers (rebuilt). The fixed portion of their sight is too short and I am now thinking perhaps the best solution is to mill off that part and then install a new, higher fixed rear sight.

	If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

	Thanks for those photos of the sling loop, they certainly show me what I needed & will help. You don't often see factory fitted loops on Remington RB sporters. Looks like they used a modified military loop. Thanks. Spud

	Take a look at the 1861 barrel band swivel. S&S has the swivel and screw for $15 part 58S126 You can make your own dovetail base.

	What is the serial number of that roller? Also, the photos don't quite show the caliber markings, but I'm guessing it's marked "44 CTGE S" (for "Special,") which was the early designation for the .44-77, IIRC.

Serial # is 1693 and yes the caliber mark is 44 CTGE with a large S following.

I was told the .44S or .44 Ctge. S the "S" stood for Sharps. But Special sounds better to me!

I have friends who own hundreds of antique firearms and have never fired any of them. I like shooting all of mine, but don't condemn anyone for just collecting and not shooting. To each their own.

There is a very similar Rolling Block sporter on Gun Broker with exactly the same two rear barrel sights as my rifle. The serial number is about 2000 different but it is pretty much the same gun. 	I see on the Gunbroker gun that the Remington marking on the barrel was partly removed when the dovetail for the rough 'n ready sight was cut, so I think maybe it was added later. Does your rifle have a Remington stamp on the barrel anywhere? Steve

	Neither of my older Rolling Blocks have any type of stamping on the upper side of the barrel. They both have the rough and ready sight.

	Yep, to shoot or not shoot. Which way to jump. If nobody else did makes you not want to; then having a fine rifle and not shoot it like it was made for seems a shame.
