Hayes was 5'10" and weighed 145 pounds. This rifle is just shy of 16 pounds. He was a strong guy!

He would have to hook that thing underneath his arm pit and tie some sandbags to his rear to keep from tipping forward...

Neat rifle, Tom.

It is a neat rifle. Some detail photos would be nice to go with this.
And, Joe, no wonder it appeals to you since it's sporting a palm rest sort of like the one you had reproduced a while back. He sure was a tough fellow to shoot that one standing upright, with a tummy full of Wheaties.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Will Hayes was one of the winningest shooters in his time, and he had numerous rifles built or barreled by Schalk. The two were the first to collaborate on a false muzzle barrel for cartridge rifles, and Schalk really didn't want to build the barrel Hayes wanted, but it turned out to be a huge success.

This Schalck at 16 pounds 13 ounces is very heavy. But we must remember that they only held the rifle up for a short time between loadings in the old style matches. A mans height has nothing to do with his strength.

True Joe, but looking at pictures of many of the shooters in the late 1800's I sure don't see many that aren't just small, but also pretty thin too.

I remember watching a fellow toss a truck tire on the rim into the back of a 12 yard dump truck at Tiny's tire in Tacoma. You know how big and heavy those tires are. The man was in his mid twenties and scarcely over 5'5" inches tall.

What impesses me about the old match shooters is, they could load and shoot all day. But thinking back, we used to shoot all day at Tacoma till there wasn't enough light to see the targets. So maybe we just don't remember how strong we were when we were young
