Scored one of my bucket list smallbore rifles recently, an early .22 rimfire Ballard, re-barreled
and customized by A. Hubalek. And now the wait for shipping and FFL jail begins!

Ballards may be weaker,

Hubalek .22's are usually very accurate. Good looking old Ballard.

If you look a couple of threads away to Traditional Marlin Ballard Target Rifle ", it's an Eric Johnson barrelled rifle with a butt stock almost identical to this Hubalek rifle.  The fore end is similar as well, differing in how they are shaped close to the action.

Arthur Hubalek Custom Ballard "Hubalek Special" Rifle in 22 LR Caliber - Made originally by Marlin Firearms Company, circa 1881-95 as a No. 3 Gallery Rifle with flat top, rebated sidewall frame. Carries the 3 line Marlin address on the left side of the frame. It was customized and rebarreled by Arthur Hubalek, who worked circa 1930 in Brooklyn, New York. Hubalek was a Master Gunsmith known for his excellent shooting rimfire rifles.
This rifle has a 29" blued target weight round barrel fitted with Margaret Thompson’s Lyman 20x Super Targetspot. Barrel is marked "A. Hubalek/Special." Hubalek’s “Special” barrels were guaranteed to shoot 10 shots to keep within 0.125” center to center at 25 yards from a machine rest.

Case-hardened Union Hill Ballard action with plain re-worked single trigger and checkered wood tipped opening lever. Custom walnut stock with over-the-comb rollover cheekpiece fitted with checkered steel marksman style butt plate. Stock stamped C.W.L.H. under butt plate. Walnut checkered marksman style swelled beavertail forearm with adjustable hand position sling mounts.

CONDITION: Overall 98% barrel blue with light scuffs and edge wear. Action has traces of case colors with oxidation marks, especially in grip areas. Wood has 90% of original finish with usage marks and sharp checkering. Good bore and mechanics. Serial # 29723

NOW.... waiting for a good range day!

Nice Ballard. And the Hubalek connection is always better!
No Marlin Ballards made after 1891, as John Marlin stopped all Ballard production in 1890.
Your Ballard with a flat receiver top is NOT a Union Hill action as all Union Hill models were pistol grip frames, and forged actions. Yours is a #2 Sporting Rifle cast action. It has the 3 line address used on almost all #2 actions, and also has the reversible firing pin on the breech block as the firing pin screw is located down low like a #2, and CF blocks used round firing pins with retaining screw above the firing pin, so much higher in the breech block.

Thanks marlinguy.  I appreciate your analysis. My two Marlin Ballard's are the only ones I have ever handled, and I would have been weeks or months in Dutcher & other references trying to sort out the puzzling configuration details that you pointed out.

Oh, WOW! Love that!  The "heely bob" thingie on the lever is awesome!

I always like Sharps rifles with the straight stock and the buffalo horn "pistol grip cap" (heelybob) that would sometimes be added to them.
