Help with historical rifle

Hi - New here but I have been a Sharps fiend since childhood.  I'm trying to remember the details associated with a particular Sharps rifle that was used for serious target work in the 19th century and was apparently so accurate that it was banned from competition.  It has a name attached to it that I can't remember.  I think it was a very heavy 34" gun, I want to say it was 45-110?  Anyway, would appreciate a reminder.  Thanks.

I believe that Orville Loomer owns this rifle now.  I shot with him once a long time ago.  He's quite a knowledgeable guy regarding Sharps rifle history.  He sure knows a lot more of the history than I do.

Thank you!

I'm trying to regain access to that forum but hit nothing but dead ends.  It still seems active but I can't get any response and can't change my password.

I think I have a link to that on my desktop and I'll look for it later today. Lots of unanswered questions about that rifle and I've had an interest in it for a long time too.

Thanks.
I'm curious if that Julia auction photo rifle is actually Tollofson's.  Does it letter to a dealer near him, or maybe to him?  I mean it makes sense that it would be, just some details not specified.

Couldn't find the link but I saved some pictures that were posted by Orville Loomer.

Here is a link to an obituary of the possible first owner of the rifle but I have no proof.  Orville mentioned that the first owner lived just south of the MN border.  Jeffrey was born in St. Ansgar, Iowa which is just south of Austin, MN His age would be about right but there are so many questions about how a young man living in a little prairie town back then could afford that rifle and how and where he traveled to compete?  What matches was he barred from as this rifle was already banned from Creedmoor matches because of it's weight and double set triggers.  Bob

On page 146 of Marcot's Volume III on Sharps rifle's there is some info on Tollefson's rifle.   He calls it a benchrest rifle.  That makes sense as I can't see it having a great range with that rear scope mount.

DST, weight, and the scope could have gotten the gun banned from many matches in the early days.

Thanks - that's fascinating.  I also wondered how an 18 year old guy could buy a rifle like that, or would at that age be such a dedicated shooter to want such a thing.  Maybe his father was a prosperous farmer.  All very interesting.

Most assuredly a bench gun. I wouldn't think you could possibly shoot it offhand. Can't tell how big that target circle is but for the time that would have been some amazing accuracy. I think to this day Shiloh will still build you a 20 pound gun. Don't think they have done too many of them but I think you can still get one built if your wallet can stand it...

Yeah you can get them with 14,16,&25 lb weights.  They aren't built very often.  I don't have a 25 pounder, but they all come in a little heavier than the listed weight.
