Nov/Dec Journal - Page 16

I have a question about the beautiful Ballard on page 16 in the new journal. In the pic below, what is the “lever” that the blue line is pointing to? I have not seen something like this and was curious. Thanks.

Just a wild guess, but maybe a rest for the shooter’s trigger finger so you only touch the set trigger when ready for it to go bang(?)

Seems logical. Thanks.

The lever is a Ballard #6 Ball and Spur lever, but as Froggie said the little ring is a finger rest so you don't touch the trigger until you're ready to fire.

I put lever in quotes because I was not sure what to call it. Was this common or a special order item? I have not seen pics of this before. Makes sense, though, since some of these triggers are very light.

I used to be a member of ASSRA back in the 90s, but none of my shooting buddies were into this stuff at the time, so I lost interest. I went to a Schuetzen match once at Beeson range and a shooter there let me try his German Schuetzen rifle. It had a 1/2 ounce trigger pull once the trigger was set. It was then I understood a pic I saw in the journal a few years before. It was a Pope Ballard with a cork on the trigger with a needle thru it. At the time, I did not understand. When I shot the rifle, it hit me. The trigger is so light that the needle is there so you could feel the trigger better. Pretty wild.

Thanks for the info.

Those would all be aftermarket made by custom gunsmiths, or owners. No factory sold or offered a finger rest, and not a lot of shooters used them. I think they're neat, but wouldn't drill my receivers on an old single shot to add one.

Singer used to have an extended spur on His levers that accomplished the same thing.
