Anyone have any experience loading the 400 gr Snover in a 405 Win? I recently purchased a used Snover mold and it casts great bullets. I want to try a few in my 405 Hi Wall.

The twist rate in the .405 may be too slow for 400 gr bullet.

If it will drop bullets at .412 or larger it might shot ok provided the chamber will let you seat it out far enough to get some usable velocity.
In my model 95 my that snover bullet was an interesting experiment that honed lead mining technique.

I shoot the same 400 gr. Lyman Snover in my .40-70 using slightly shortened brass. My original Ballard 4 1/2 Mid-Range has the original 1:20" twist and it's very accurate out to 650yds. with consistent hits. Accuracy at 1000yds. isn't as good as my .40-85 Ballard using the same bullet and twist rate though. I think the extra case capacity and higher velocity makes the difference at 1000 yds.
I'm using IMR4198 in both rifles with the Snover.

My guess is that the 405 bore diameter is going to be too big for a bullet intended for the normal 40 caliber bullets.  Cast just a few and see how large they are before spending a bunch of time casting what might be undersize bullets.  I shoot 400 grain Accrurate Moulds bullets in all three of my rifles, two in 40-70 SS and a third an old Ballard in 40-85.  They shoot good in my 18 twist barrels.  Tom

405 is .413 groove and 1-14 twist the length of the snover isn’t a problem in a single shot, but the diameter being to small can give you fits

Didn't realize the .405 Win was such a large bore? All of my .40's are around .410".411" bores and the Lyman Snover drops at .4115" out of my mold.

They originally made it bigger diameter and longer case to keep the higher pressure smokeless round from chambering in a a blackpowder gun.
Also has a lot to do with them calling it 405 ,the bore diameter
Frankly I think until well into the early 1900’s the smokeless powder worried the snot out of the Winchester engineers

I guess I always assumed the "405" was the groove or bullet diameter, and thought they were smaller? Learned something new.

Plus the other thing they did on the 405 was give it a thicker rim than the 40-70 or the 40-72 in an effort to keep it out of the softer steel rifles

I have the Lyman mould dedicated to the 405 Winchester. It casts at .412 but is only like 285 grains. It is good for 200 meter silhouette in my 40-65.

I use .405 brass in my rifles chambered in .40-70SS and .40-63/70 Ballard also. No issues with rim thickness in any of them. I think most of the old chambers have generous rim cuts and accept the .405 brass easily.
