New CPA owner and breach seating

All,

I’m new to breach seating and am looking forward to trying it in a CPA rifle I just ordered, chambered in .38-55. The barrel will be a 30” Bartlien, 1:12 twist. I won't have the rifle for 3-6 months.

I have two molds, both tapered. An NOE 376-329 RN at about 330-grains and a Saeco #571 of about 300-grains. I'm getting a plugged case from CPA. I won't see the rifle for 4-6 months.

I just filled the casting pot with about 30:1 alloy or slightly softer. I plan to make (50) of each mold, to get ready for the first range session.

Question....not being real familiar with Stevens action, does it have some "camming" action that will let the plugged case be adequate to properly seat the bullet or should a breach seating tool be sought out?

I've been shooting both bullets in a Rolling Block that has a 12 twist Green Mountain 30" octagon barrel, using fixed ammunition. The matches I shoot in are 100 and 200-yards, from the bench. These are CBA BR matches, score and group. Scope is a 24X Unertl. In the Roller, IMR 4227 grains seems to work best, 16-17 grans.

Thanks for any suggestions, observations, etc.

My dad is shooting a CPA 32-40. With 1:20, he can use the plugged case CPA sells no problem. It's been about 6 months and he does not see the need for a tool.

The only advantage I see if a tool is it may make it easier to find tune seating depth

If the chamber has a throat the plug case will work just fine.  If it's only got a lead the plug case probably won't work.

YMMV

I would keep an eye on the fore sale section to see if someone puts up a Weber breach seater for a cpa.  Even if it's for a different cartridge you can always convert it.

Sportslube,

Meant to respond earlier. There are two clubs near me that host Scheutzen matches. My club, Oakdale Gun Club, only shoots 100-yards. The other one, Gopher R&R located near Harris, MN, hosts two Scheutzen 2-day matches per season. They have 100 and 200-yards and shoot a full ramge of possible Scheutzen events. You may have been there.

I've shot maybe 8-10 seasons there using my CSA Model 74 chambered in 40-70 SS, only using black powder and iron sights. But a new "plan" for 2025. Keep shooting the Sharps and also shoot the CPA in the scoped category.

Eau Claire.....at the Gopher matches I frequently hear the other shooters talkng about going over there for matches. Just to shoot the Sharps kept me from seriously considering it. But the CPA gives me more incentive. I do shoot at (4) clubs in our area and I do all of the target scoring. One club is in the Rice Lake area. These are all CBA matches.

Who knows, maybe I'll bump into you someday at Eau Claire! Hope to have breach seating figured out before then.

Tom
