The Lyman 17A arrived today.  After a little artificial wear and aging to blend with the barrel, it was installed. Now I just need the vernier tang sight back  Smiley

Steve, I have a couple of MVA vernier tang sight and like them.  But they are to shinney for the old rifles I have them on.  I have wondered if Lee Shaver sights would look any more natural to older rifles?

There are ways to remove the blueing from sights. Various chemical removers on the market etc... Often wondered if rust removers would do it like "evaporust" I am sure someone here can direct you. Then re blue it with cold blue and buff it with steel wool or maybe a green scotch brite pad. If I want a barrel to look old I will cold blue it and buff it as described. Have done several that way. Just throwing out some ideas...

evaporrust dose remove bluing. but  on harden steel like a collet like a 5C it will turn it black. On a axe head you can see the hardening line. dont put a spring under tension in it I put 2 spring calipers and both springs broke I found on the net somewhere that that will happen. works best when heated to about 100 deg. ken

Ballards may be weaker,

Plain old naval jelly works as good as anything. Just spread it all over and let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse. Sometimes takes two applications.

I got the vernier sight back from Tony Maddox with a new tension spring installed - very nice work! I'm back in business.  Hopefully I can get to the range next week  Smiley

I finally got out to the range - it was a day of firsts!

First time out with the repaired vernier sight.
First time out with the Lyman 17A front sight.
First time breech seating.

I started out at the 50 yard line to get the sights on paper. It took some windage and elevation adjustment. Then out to the 100 yard line. A liitle more windage tweaking, and very minor elevation adjustment. I tried a couple of my fixed loads. Not bad, but not exceptional.

I was a little apprehensive about breech seating. I had made up 15 cases with 14.0gr of IMR 4227, topped with a thin sliver of floral foam and WLR primers. BPjack kindly sent me some tapered Accurate  32-185P bullets in 20-1 to try out. The case with a brass rod I made for seating worked well, except I could not seat with thumb pressure alone. I ended up tapping it in with a muzzleloading short starter and small brass hammer. Not elegant, but it worked fine. I shot 3 groups, this was the best. Definately better than any of the fixed loads.  Maybe there is something to this breech seating business  Wink

If you can find some Alliant MP 300 give that a try.  When I switched to it from 4227 my groups shrunk by about 1/3.

I'll add MP300 to my gun show shopping list. I saw your load if 12.4gr of MP300 and 9-1/2 primers in the reloading sticky. Is that still your best load? Thanks.

Powder Valley had 1 pounders of MP 300 yesterday no 8 lb jugs. Emails from them last week with various deals including Haz shipping discounts. Have given up on local powder purchases.

If you want it  buy now, Alliant is not allocating much to reloaders

I keep trying different loads of 300 MP in 3 high walls with loads running hotter at times but always come back to that load I posted as it rarely disappoints.  I need to stop fiddling with the loads and pay more attention to reading the wind.  Another good powder is Accurate 4100.  Not something I see in store shelves often.  I actually found my first pound of 30O MP at a local Cabelas after reading of Jlouis’ success with it here on the forum.
