I'm looking at the MVA Winchester style windage globe sight. In the option pull down it offers the choice of #117 or #118 style.

I've read the description a couple times. Maybe I'm half blind, but I find no explanation of the difference between the two. Can anyone explain it?

Thanks
Steve

I think one has a spirit level and one doesn't but I could be wrong.  I tried to add them to the cart to compare the prices but I am getting malware alerts.

The 117 sight has a plain insert clip; the 118 has a spirit level clip.

There is a notable price difference between 117 and 118. So maybe the latter includes a spirit level.

Perhaps a plain globe sight would be sufficient. I dont expect to shoot beyond 200 yards. Once windage is set, it should be good for most conditions.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

If most of your shooting is 200 yds. or less you can use a simple globe without windage. If it gets windy you'll spend more time chasing wind trying to readjust anyway.
But for longer distances a Soule tang sight, or windage globe are a real asset. Sometimes need both if it gets really windy! Especially with lighter bullets like the .32-40 uses! Our last shoot I was getting 3 ft. of wind drift shooting my .32-40 Schoyen Ballard at 400 yds. Farther than 400 yds. was impossible to get on target that day.

I think you may be right. 200 yards is the longest range at my club. I doubt I could see targets much beyond that anyway. If I were to shoot at a longer range I'd use either my .40-70 bn Shiloh m1874 or .44-77 Remington #1 sporting rifle. Both have good sights.

I’m fussy about looking right. That Highwall would look perfect with a 17A Lyman they were produced about the same period the gun was used if not built. Expensive windage & level globe front sort of needs a full target Tang sight to look right . As a pair adding a Hadley disk you’re into nearly a thousand dollars.  I have two CPA’s set up that way.

Match shooting it’s worth it, otherwise I prefer close to original and it’s such a nice original tang sight on the gun. It’s possible to buy Vintage 17A’s that would have the right Patina too. . My vintage Marlin leaver actions all have Lyman’s

Opinion worth what it cost !

If you want to try a tapered bullet that probably won't work in fixed ammo since it will just fall inside with its smaller forward bands, I have 41 cast in 20-1 and 6 in 30-1 all lubed with Javelina lube I can send you free of charge.  Juat PM me your address and I will send them.

Jack

The bullets just arrived  Smiley  Unfortunately the foam that held them upright had been jarred loose, and the bullets mixed up. So no way to tell the 20-1 from the 30-1. But no matter, they will be great to try breech seating with. Thanks again very much!

The vernier sight is on its way to Tony Maddox for a new spring. This will give me time to get ready to try these  Smiley

I definately want it to look right. I already have a 17A on a #2 roller. Its a good, reasonably priced sight. I will look for a low profile version. I can age the finish to blend with the rifle. Thanks Boats!

Steve, you should see a weight difference between the two alloys so if you run them over a scale they should sort themselves into two groups.

Good point Chris. They are already lubed, so that may cause a little more variation. But I'll give it a try.

Sunday morning project - make an adjustable plugged case. I just winged it. A bit crude, but I think it will work.

I slugged the bore. Groove diameter came in at .3201".

I measured the front sight height and compared it to the currently available Lyman 17A heights. I was using a 6 O'clock hold on the bull with the current Lyman #4. So with the 17A aperature, the .404" height will be pretty close when centered. So I just ordered one  Smiley

That adjustable case will work just fine as long as your bullet is a reasonably close fit to the throat.  I have made a few like that.  Rather than pushing them in with my thumb, I use a Klein nut driver as its easier on the thumbs.
