I've not yet dug into my bullet stash, but I don't think there is anything heavier than 170gr. I'm open to bullet and load suggestions.

I must admit that I have never breech seated, so know very little about how its done. But I'm up to try it. But I think a better front sight will be needed to to get a noticable improvment.  Some type of globe sight with inserts would be ideal.

Steve, you might check out the Lyman 17 series globe sights.

That is a reasonably priced option. Just a few months ago I put one on my .25-25 #2 rolling block. It works quite well.

I think you will find a 175-195 gr bullet will be the Goldilocks bullet for that old Winchester barrel.  As I said, I found that 200 grain Ideal 31952, but although I settled down to using it, it was probably a skosh more heavy than optimal.

I looked through my bullets and these are the heaviest I found. In the left is a 178gr. Bullet from a Lee 8mm mold.  On the right is a commerial bullet I bought somewhere. It weighs in at 184gr. I'll try these out next.

I'm seriously thinking about a globe with inserts front sight. I want to get the best results from this rifle. I need a better front sight to shoot beyond 100 yards. Maybe even one with windage like this MVA.

If you want to get the most out of that rifle, get yourself one of bpjack's seaters and find some tapered bullets that fit the throat well and you will make a big difference on the group size.  You'll probably cut those groups in half.

Let me check my bullet inventory later this morning. I think I have some that I cast from an Accurate mould that I can send you. If they work out I can sell you the mould at a good price.  I have replaced it for my 16 twist 32-40s with a couple of others in te same weight range.

If you want to try a tapered bullet that probably won't work in fixed ammo since it will just fall inside with its smaller forward bands, I have 41 cast in 20-1 and 6 in 30-1 all lubed with Javelina lube I can send you free of charge.  Juat PM me your address and I will send them.

Jack - that is very generous of you. Being that I've never breech seated, I need some guidance on how best to do it.  PM coming.
Thanks,
Steve

The bullets will go out today.  My suggestion is to read up about breech seating in the link I sent you and see if these bullets can be hand seated with a plugged case with the bullet about 1/16" ahead of the case mouth.  That will give you an idea of what they will do.  Then you can evaluate if you want to invest in one of my seaters that will handle a larger variety of bullets including those that are not tapered.

Now you see there Jack, there are nice old complete HW Winchesters out there. Just keep at it. One will come your way eventually.  Smiley

That is what I was looking for at the August Oregon Arms show.  Was hoping to see the selection from last year.  Was in the market for an all original pistol grip with double set triggers and had the funds to buy one.  I am happy with the .22 Hornet high wall I came home with. Dime sized groups at 100 yds with jacketed bullets ain’t bad.  Not all original though a .22 long rifle conversion with a barrel that might have been set back a tad.
My 32-20 low wall is about as close to all original that I have. Someone just added scope blocks.

With only 10 so far I have room for a couple more.  It’s a good thing I mess up a seater occasionally so I can have 8 or 9 that I don’t want to sell, mostly due to cosmetic issues.  That way I can have a seater for almost every rifle.

I'm looking at the MVA Winchester style windage globe sight. In the option pull down it offers the choice of #117 or #118 style.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I've read the description a couple times. Maybe I'm half blind, but I find no explanation of the difference between the two. Can anyone explain it?

Thanks
Steve

2 CPA’s 4 barrels have windage adjustable front sights on 2 fixed the other 2. Mike Stevens and MVA makers. Adjustable fronts advantage you can use it set the no wind zero to center the windage markings on the rear sight. Makes it easier to crank wind on and off with the rear during a match. Less chance of error starting with zero.

Fixed fronts I do the same moving the sight in its dovetail hammer and brass punch. Those barrels fronts have been set many years never changed. In fact have never adjusted windage on the fronts during a match with the adjustables.  My distances limited to 500 yards, longer they may be useful.

You can save quite a bit buying MVAs fixed fronts and they’re not as bulky as the adjustable plus they are lower . Lyman 17 fronts are my favorite for bolt or lever actions. They work well and are available different heights, a significant advantage.

I don’t see the difference between the 117 118 either, it could be dovetail size. Looking at that page notice the sprit level photos. It blocks a portion of the target. I recently switched all mine to plain clips. Levels a good idea but shooting silhouettes I need all the target visible to pick the spot breaking the shot. Canting the rifle inconsistently not good & the level will let you know it’s not canted . Not a feature I need, targets view is.

Quality and choices you won’t go wrong with MVA. The plain globe front would look good on that rifle & duplicates original
