Thanks guys, I'm pretty stoked to get it. The rear sight does not lock up in position. I suspect the spring is missing or broken. I'll look at it this week. Anyone know a source for that spring?

My gun club here in Virginia goes out to 200 yards. That's probably the limit (or beyond) with iron sights and aging eyes. But I'm up for trying  Smiley

I removed the tang sight to see why there was no spring detent function. As suspected, the spring tip is broken and gone. Reading up on the sights I learned that the Winchester rifle model the sight was made for was stamped on the bottom. It had to do with the upper tang angle differing by model. Each model had a unique spring length that made the staff  lock vertical. This one is stamped 76, indicating it was made for a model 1876. So maybe it was broken intentionally to use on this rifle.

Does anyone know a source for these springs?

Very nice. Congratulations, and regardless of what Vall says, it will always be the #1 single shot in my view.  I got my 32-40 Plain Sporter as a barreled action, supposedly complete, and was able to find a correct original butt stock and fore end (separately) and bought a sear (the only missing internal part) from Ben Rice.  It came with the screw for a tang sight, so I put an old Lyman tang with windage then added a Winchester globe at the front.  I’d hate to think how much it’s been shot, and while the bore isn’t perfect, it shoots like it is!  Wink
If you enjoy yours half as much as I’ve enjoyed mine, it’ll make you a happy guy.  Have fun.
Froggie
PS  I gathered up and assembled my high wall over 25 years ago.  I seriously doubt I could do it today.

Speaking of iron sights@ 200 yds, I used to go up to Fairfax and shoot their Ram Bash with mine… full size rams on swingers.  If I did my part, it would ring those rams pretty well.
BTW, is that a #3 or #4 barrel?  Mine is a #3 and at my age even that seems pretty heavy!  Shocked
What bullet are you going to shoot in it?  I started out with the original Winchester 165 gr mould but then I found an old Ideal 31952 in 200 gr.  That became my go to bullet (in front of IMR 4759, of course).

It is a #3 barrel. The rifle weighs 9lbs 14oz.

I have a bunch of mild .32-40 already loaded for my 1930 M1894 Winchester. I need to shoot some of that up to have some dedicated brass for this rifle. My bullet options are meager right now. I have an old 163 gr Ideal mold, a Lee 8mm 172 gr mold and a couple different store bought bullets of 155gr and 170gr.

Steve, maybe Lee Shaver can help you with a spring for your sight!

A little further reading last night on the Winchester Collectors forum clarifies the the rifle model is stamped on the sight staff spring not the base. I've not yet removed what remains of the spring, but I can see no stamp on it.  The 76 is on the base.

I looked at Lee Shaver's web site, but he has no sights close to this, so I doubt he has a spring. But it is worth asking. Thanks.

Steve, if all else fails, get some 1075 or 1080 and make a spring.  Doesn’t look to complicated.

Contact The Original Sight Co. as Tony makes copies of the original sights and should have the spring to sell.

I just heard back from Tony. I'll send him the sight and he'll check it out and fit a new spring to it.  Smiley  Thanks Vall!

Maiden voyage under the new skipper!

I took the highwall to the range this morning. I had several mild loads previously loaded for my M1894 lever gun. I really just wanted to get it on paper to get an idea of how the sights were. I started out at 50 yards and found windage was pretty close, but hitting about 10" above POA. But the group was surprisingly good; the first shot was a little to the left, but the next 4 were almost touching.  After this the sight was lowered to 51 points, then another group was fired. This brought the group down to where I wanted it.

After plinking with a couple different loads, I decided to try 100 yards. That open front sight did my aging eyes no favors! But after a couple tries I managed a respectable 2.0" group.

I'm very pleased with the results and look forward to more serious load development. The next step is to send the vernier sight to Tony for a new staff spring. In the mean time, I'll get some loading done  Smiley

good start. Mine likes a heavier bullet, like Froggie says. In some instances, it has done very well with fixed ammo as well, but there is no disputing the breech seated bullets are the best.
Just to say, nowadays I wouldn't do as well as your "aging eyes" do with iron sights.
