Finally found a nice .32-40 highwall

Over the last few months I've posted about looking for a nice period .32-40 single shot. I've looked at Ballards, Stevens. Remingtons and highwalls online, but nothing was just right.

Well today was the day. I bought this very nice .32-40 highwall. The serial number dates it to 1888. Metal and wood finish both look original and very nice. The case colors are faded, but still very visible. It has a 30", #3 weight barrel with nearly perfect bore. Single trigger, but the action is tight and crisp. The tang sight is old, but I don't know what it is. The front sight is unusual, but I've never had a highwall, so its all new to me. My experience is mostly with Remington rolling blocks.

I'm excited to get it and look forward to my first range trip.

Steve

Looks wonderful. It has Made it 140 years almost and nobody has screwed it up. Always great when you can find one like that to shoot. Looks like a factory vernier sight in rear and a Lyman number 4 up front. Enjoy!

For hunting, I have been very happy with a Lyman tang sight and a Lyman #4 as you have. From grouse to fox to Whitetail deer.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Nice find Steve! Don't see the very early 1885's in such nice shape very often. Almost as good as a Ballard! Wink

Indeed, I feel very fortunate to be its caretaker. No telling how many hands it passed through in the last 135 years, but all must have had a keen appreciation of it and gave it good care.

Fortunately I have a good stash of .32-40 brass and ammo loaded for my 1930 M1894 Winchester. All under 1350 FPS. I'll shoot some of it up in this and keep it dedicated to the rifle.

I just checked Stroebel's Old Gunsights book. I concur with the Lyman #4 front sight. It doesn't mention when it became available, but it seems like a later addition. The rear sight seems to match the Winchester mid-range vernier sight shown on page 289, except mine has graduations on the left. The book indicates they are on the right. Maybe a running change?

that's a really nice one, Steve. it looks like it's telling you that some good shooting is in store for you. and, yes, the range is going to want to lengthen over much of your shooting. it'll do it with ease.
