Rimfire National Match?
Oct 17th, 2024 at 4:26pm
Print Post
Greetings,
I am taking an informal survey. I am starting to look into organizing a 3 day rimfire match in the Winter of 2026 at The Ben Avery Range in Phoenix, AZ. I know seems a bit far off, but putting something like this together is going to take some work.
Courses of fire will include Benchrest, Cross Stick and Offhand using ASSRA rules and targets. There may also be some local flavor and/or side matches also.
Thoughts, ideas, feedback and discussion is appreciated.
Thank You,
Scott

What month?  Never been there.  Are there places to stay nearby?

A national .22RF match is a great idea. Holding it at Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Arizona during the "WINTER" is perfect  Wink That's when the shooting weather in the Az desert is at its best.
I assume it will be on the Bench Rest range so there are over 50 shooting benches. You might throw a few photos of the range on the forum so folks can get a feel of how the range is laid out.
The BASF is located right off the I-17 freeway, so access is a breaze and with on-site camping and lots of hotel/motels & restaurants in the Phoenix area, accommodations are not at all a problem.
Your proposed shooting program looks like it will offer plenty events from which to choose. Will there be an overall champion are will the individual matches each have winners and prizes?
Good luck with your planning and let me know if I can help (maybe a couple of nice King targets?)

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Randy thank you for your generous offer I really do appreciate it!
You're right Ben Avery is a world class shooting facility. The Benchrest Range easily accommodates 50 participants. I'm planning on limiting the event to 50 participants. No one like sitting around waiting to shoot.
I'm also thinking about having a swap meet on the practice day before that events start.
Let's see if we can generate interest to make this all happen.

In all seriousness.....here we go.
It's a match in a warm climate while the rest of the country is cold/under snow. If one of the premier rimfire manufacturers helps that'd be cool. Maybe some folks from the single shot world? There will with trophies and maybe some $ from side matches. Perhaps a dinner that Sunday at a local German Restaurant/Bier Garten.
I'm just feeling things out.
What sort of incentive are you looking for?

Do you realize what sort of weather people will have to travel through to get to your warm weather national match?

I'm feeling things out too, Scott.

Yes, I do I spent 28 years in Cleveland, Ohio. I've driven from Cleveland to Amherst, Massachusetts with the NY Thru Way closed due to winter conditions and needing to find alternative routes.
I think it would be great to have a national match/get together at Ben Avery and Winter is the time to do it. With this location I could see it drawing, 22 BPCRA, ASSRA, ISSA and WSU members. It'd be pretty cool to see members of the different organizations on one range.
Throw in a killer swap meet and celebration on Sunday....
Sounds like a great time!

Scott,
Sounds like a good excuse for me to get out of Dodge when the weather is at its best here,... not really Dodge and not nice weather - just an idiom...  And an excuse for a new build with a match to try it.
Keep us posted.

Will do Greg. I'm fairly certain this match will go down. Whether 5 or 50 participants. I'd like to make this happen.

**Update**
I have spoken with Arizona State Rifle and Pistol Association. leadership. Looks like I can make this match happen.
Still need to get a few folks to help with scoring and running the line. I've got a few leads (fingers crossed).
Currently working on putting together courses of fire.
Brainstorming sources for trophies/prizes. I think I'm on to something special.
Hopefully next year at this time we will be preparing for our Inaugural Match.
Happy New Year,
Scott

For the first go of it I am looking to keep it simple.
All events will be 100 yards with any sights.
Match will be limited to 50 participants.
I want to make sure it keeps moving and doesn't drag on.

Scott.

I will actually show up just to watch and meet some of the Gang here.  That would be fun!  ( and you know how I despise the drive to the West Side )

( My interests are in engineering, history, restoration/conservation and informal shooting...I have no competitive interests at all. )

Course of fire and targets are pretty much worked out. Tweaking some particulars. We submit our request in June for match dates.
When/if the match goes off it will be in January or February of 2026.
Starting to research options for awards and banquette.
Fingers crossed we get the dates.

What format will you use? Open relays (Schuetzen), or timed shoulder to shoulder relays (smallbore)?

Limiting to 50 shooters seems constricted when considering you’re labeling this a “National “ match.

Last year, the 22BPCRA Nationals attracted 160 shooters nationwide to attend the event at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton.

If you’re serious about creating a “Nationals” event, then you ought to consider how to accommodate more than 50 competitors.

I agree Moose. However, I’m concerned about this being the first match and don’t want it to flop. I’m uncertain about having volunteers to help score targets run the line etc….
The 22 BPCRA is a robust organization with support from inside it’s ranks.
“Schuetzen” is not as popular as 22 BPCR. If we actually had 50 participants I would be quite pleased.
We will see how this one goes and build from there  Smiley

I hope to see this become more than just a match. I envision it being an event for those who love single shot. I'd like to see the artist and writers set up a booth on the day of the swap meet. How about all of the single shot disciplines and organizations (ie ASSRA, ISSA, WSU, 22BPCR, RMBPCR, etc...) set up a booth also?
Folks can share memorabilia.

Thanks for your initiative and WORK in getting this event underway, Scott. Shooting with 49 like-minded people in warm weather in winter sounds like plenty of incentive to me.  More than that number would be crowded. 😉

I would double check on this, I'm not sure it is accurate if shipped to an FFL. May be better to ship to themselves at a "Care Of" person. Although non-FFL shipping of firearms is getting harder and harder based on shipper "policies".

If you are an artist, writer, business or organization that serves the single shot community then you are eligible to set up a booth for no cost at the Single Shot Rimfire National Match.

Just something to think about. Maybe take a look at holding that match just before the Desert International BPTR match. The folks shooting the 22bptr midrange match at the start of that might just enter your match? They'll already be there with rifles and ammo.

Greetings I hope today finds you well. I have received some inquiries regarding rules/compliance. I hope to clarify them in this post.
Hooked butt plates are not allowed in the cross stick events.
Hooked butt plates may be used in benchrest and offhand events.
Any type of scope/optic may be used for any match.
Palm rests and hooked butt plates are permitted in the offhand events.
Please keep your questions coming I am more than happy to clarify.

To clarify a couple of folks asked if the cross stick match is shot off of a bench. The cross stick match is not shot off of a bench. The firing positions come from BPCR and BPTR.

Quick note regarding this Sunday’s match (at Ben Avery) -I won’t be attending, but Byron has kindly agreed to collect entries and payments for The Single Shot Rimfire National Match on my behalf.

If you’re planning to participate, please prepare a sealed envelope containing:
- Your full name
- The events you’re entering
- Whether you’ll attend practice and dinner
- Payment for the entry fee

Byron will be collecting everything at the match this Sunday. With entries already coming in from out-of-town shooters and the event capped at just 50 participants, I strongly recommend submitting your registration as soon as possible to secure your spot.

Let me know if you have any questions ahead of time.

Thanks,
Scott

Great idea at a amazing shooting venue. Sounds like many of you will be traveling so my suggestion:
1. Bring multiple guns
2. Shoot Ben Avery for both Rifle, Shotgun ( Trap, Skeet, Bunker & Sporting Clays), pistol and Indoor Air Rifle Range
3. Go to Tucson and Shoot at Tucson Trap and Skeet (Trap, Skeet, Wobble, Helice and Sporting Clays) Winter Training site for many of the World's Olympic Teams.
4. South of Tucson is the Three Points Rifle Range, ranges out to 1,500 yards.

Ben Avery, Tucson Trap and Skeet have camping facilities from full hook-up to rough.
It's amazing to find three great facilities within 2 1/2 hour drive all while shooting in short selves in January!

Just saw this, it's intriguing.  My wife and I are planning to be down in Arizona around this time, and have no agenda, so could shoot it.

However, I've never shot a schuetzen event in my life.  So would be a steep learning curve.  I haven't shot my suitable 22's in over 10 years, and one has never been shot by me.

The real obstacle is logistics, though.   We're going down to off road for a couple of weeks.  Fitting in a benchrest, couple of rifles, scope, cross sticks, etc would be close to impossible in an already crowded vehicle.  And, then beating them up off road for a couple of weeks.  They'd be horribly in the way the rest of the trip.

Have to think on it, guess there's still another week to decide, if the spaces don't all get taken up by then.

Unfortunately, I'm hard of understanding, or not playing with a full deck.  The ASSRA rulebook I can find doesn't seem to align with this match at all.

I have been trying to understand the match, the equipment, and the targets and coming up with nothing.  I'm trying to figure out what equipment I would need, to decide if I can do this.  The most pressing question is if I have a suitable rifle, that I can shoot all 3 matches with, that I don't mind being beat up and damaged with a couple of weeks off roading  with it in the vehicle after we're done with this match.  I've got a benchrest Ballard that I'm not too fond of that I can use, if it meets the rules and will work with the targets and sticks.

I read the ASSRA rulebook, and I'm not sure which match rules align with this particular match.  For instance, I don't find any prairie dog rules in the book.  For the benchrest rules, I don't find any 50 shot matches at 100.

Can anybody shed some light on these things?

On the cross stick match, is it prone or sitting?  What target is it shot on, and how many shots per target?  I did see a clarification of no hook buttplate, so that limits which rifles I can use.  It appears to be any sight, not separate iron and scope classes?

On the benchrest rules, it really doesn't matter to me as much as I can accommodate most anything, but it would be nice to know which target and how many shots per target so I could pick an appropriate scope.  I see there's a local rule at Ben Avery no benchrest metal feet touching the bench, what is normally done for that?  Put a piece of plywood between your rest and the bench?

On the offhand match, which target is used, and how many targets, shots per target?

Spectators/non shooters allowed?

Thanks!

Dave,

The ASSRA Rimfire Cross Stick course of fire was originally named The Prairie Dog Match. The named was later changed to The Squirrel Match. Therefore the rules are identical. 50 shots fired on 6 ASSRA #1 1/2 targets. 1 target is for unlimited sighters. The remaining 5 are for the 50 shots. 10 shots on each record target.
Fired from the prone or seated from a stool position. This event and all others are any sights. No differentiation between scope or irons.

The Offhand Course of fire, The Jacoby Match is 50 shots fired on 6 ASSRA #1 1/2 targets. 1 target is for unlimited sighters. The remaining 5 are for the 50 shots. 10 shots on each record target.

So far we have 41 participants from various shooting discilplnes and levels of experience. Bench assignments are currently being set up. I encourage folks to contact me asap to reserve your spot. There will not be day of payment/sign up.

In regards to the spikes some folks hammered them into the bench tops thus destroying the benches. Many of us use products like Stabilfeet between the spike and bench top.

***Spectators Might Be Put To Work***

If you have any more questions please feel free to keep them coming.

Thanks Scott for putting this on!

I'm in, and since I haven't shot a rimfire rifle for 11 years, except to function test in the shop, I figured I'd go to the range and make sure it will work.  Took the Ballard I'm going to shoot, and also the ballard I just finished to test.  Shot at 100 yards.

I'm going to set the bar pretty low, this is all you will have to beat to not be in 42n'd place:

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I sighted in on the black side, flipped it over and shot clockwise from target 2.  The wind was about 3 to 5, but the shooting area is enclosed on 3 sides, and no wind flags.  I absolutely could not judge the wind, couldn't even tell if it was blowing or not, nor the direction.  it gradually shifted more from the right, by the end of target 3, it was starting to blow the bullets off the left side, which continued to target 1, with one not even on paper, where I made a sight adjustment, and then went off to the right severely as the wind switched and blew all the way over to the sighter.

The ballard with iron sights didn't do particularly well, same wind conditions as the last of the other targets.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Nothing spectacular, but will be fun to shoot the match.

Looks like the targets I shot last week
It's been at least six years since I shot a match and am just as rusty. I'm just going for the fun.and experience meeting fellow shooters. I'll be #43 out of 42 shooters.
