The Grey Rat gets a Scope
Oct 14th, 2024 at 2:21pm
Print Post
My heavy (1.22") barreled high wall is now sporting a scope of an appropriate scale, my new Unertl 2" Ultra Varmint.  This combination weighs in at 15 lbs.  Not my offhand rifle!
The grey rat is so named due its French grey receiver and 8 groove 32-40 barrel with a ratty exterior.

32-40.  Joe thinks it may be a Bresien barrel.

Serious looking rifle Jack. When they see you coming with that rat rifle half the shooters will pack up and go home.

Impressive!   Smiley

That assumes I can muster up the energy to lug it to the bench.  I have a couple of new bullets to try in it.  Even though it is a 16 twist it will stabilize my 208 gr spitzer.  I gave a couple of new to me Hoch moulds and a Saeco that are around 200 gr.

I wasn’t able to intimidate anyone at the range today since I was the only shooter from 8-12.  I ran out of elevation with the 3/16” scope blocks so I had to switch to my emergency 5/8” ones I keep in my range kit. The scope worked well but it was not a good test of clarity as it was slightly foggy and a light mist was blowing in my face and fogging up the scope and my spotting scope.  When the rebuilt the shelter a few years back they made the roof about 2’ short on both the front and back.  The Grey Rat shot well with the Paul Jones ‘French’ spitzer.  The 12x scope will be better and something like my 30-40 Krag  barrel I think.  I might just sell it and look for another 20x Lyman.

I had the 15X Unertl Ultra Varmint and Trace Scope Repairs inserted very fine crosshairs for me.
The Unertls have excellent light and clarity.
However for benchrest shooting with my .32 caliber rifles I have found 24X with a super fine crosshairs and 1/8 MOA adjustments provided an edge in holding off or adjusting my sights.

The bell on the scope looks awfully close to the barrel. Might want to tidy up the wrist area on that stock. It looks a bit proud of the metal. Speaking of giving guns a name I have a 74 Sharps in 45-90 I call " the Missouri" cause when I shoot it with black powder and a 500gr bullet it looks like the battleship Missouri's 16 inch guns. Kinda kicks like it too. Makes the most perfect smoke rings too.

JMH

I did have to switch to higher blocks to get to 200.  This rifle needs one of my 20X scopes so it is up in the air as to what I am going to do with this scope.  I will probably switch the barrel and stocks to a different action this winter.
