Rifle chamber

Have a chance to buy a rifle that is in 45-100 I think. It is marked 45 2 7/8. What are the chances of finding some brass?

Either 2.6" or 2 7/8" cases will cost you dearly for any sizeable qty.

If it's marked 2  7/8 its a 45-110.
Cases are at the unobtaiium level right now. Best bet would be if Buffalo Arms can get enough back orders they can get Norma to make a run of brass, or if they get enough 2.6 cases from Starline to stretch to the 2 7/8.
Or if you just want 20 or so to shoot casually have Rocky Mountain Cartridge in Worland wy build you some.

I for some reason listed it a 45-100. Yes it is a 110. I guess if I can find an original I could turn some from stock brass. 45-90 would be too long a jump for the bullet and you would have to seat a bullet a mile out. I know a guy who has a Shiloh 45-120 I might get a few from. Haven't pulled the trigger yet.

In the old days no one called the rifle chamber a 45-100 or a 45-110.   The 45-2-7/8" case was often loaded with a 100gr charge so that would make it a 45-100 when firing that ammo.

Maybe you can find someone willing to part with some 45 Basic brass.  I usually see it for sale once or twice a year ( private sales of used brass not new brass is a store ).

If you can, you'd want to get some Norma 45 2.88" long brass.   That's what I did a long time ago when I bought my first 45-2-7/8" rifle. It's really good brass.  You might also find the occasional bit of Bertram brass.  I've had bad luck with it, but it's better than no brass.

Chris.

If the rifle is a good deal, and you end up not finding brass, could always set the barrel back a bit, re thread, and turn it into a 45-79, 90, 100, etc

Had thought about that but it is untouched and I would not want to do a set back. Contacted Buffalo arms today and back ordered two boxes. Lady said it takes three to four weeks to get Bertram from Australia and said they ordered a week ago. Was told I would get an email if and when they arrive. In the mean time I will be looking for something.

Well I guess this was a moot point. Contacted the gentleman today and for now he wants to keep it and play with it a while which I fully understand. But he said I had first chance at it... If the brass do come by chance I will keep them for a just in case. Thanks everyone for the help and the tip on Buffalo Arms.

The Bertram brass wont ever come. They announced on their web site recently that due to circumstances beyond their control they will not be exporting any brass to the USA. I'm surprised the people at BACO didn't tell you that, or didn't know it?

I am not surprised but thanks for the tip. No the lady I spoke with said probably 4 to 6 weeks. Maybe she was misinformed by management. Maybe they can find another source...

Its a moot point now. But I've never been put off by lack of brass for an obsolete cartridge. If the gun tickles my fancy, I'll make, find or have brass made by RMC, rimfire or centerfire. I really enjoy the challenge of bringing a long dormant rifle back to life. I've always had good luck finding brass right here by posting a Wanted ad. The good folks here are always willing to help out.

I think I may have put the cart before the horse on this one. The gentleman decided he wanted to keep the gun and play with it for a while which I fully understand but if I do manage to wind up with it I like you will find brass somewhere somehow...
