22 Hornet High Wall = a keeper

I picked up this run of the mill high wall at the Oregon Arms Collectors show in late August since there were only a couple of centerfire high walls to choose from.  The price was reasonable.  It has an original #3 weight .22 LR barrel that has been set back (I believe, due to additional dovetail slot) and recambered to 22 Hornet.  The bore is bright with decent rifling and shallow pitting the entire length.  I cleaned it well yesterday with a Birchwpod Casey lead removal cloth per Marlinguy's recommendation.  It shot fairly well with the crappy barrel sights that came with it so I drilled and tapped it for scope blocks a couple of days ago and added a 10x Lyman scope.  Today was the first time out with the scope and a couple of different loads with jacketed bullets.  I did have some cast loads but they are too fast without gas checks so I plan on working on milder loads.  BUT with 10.5 gr of Accurate 1680 and 40 gr Hornady VMAX spitzers at about 2400 fps, I managed this 5 shot group at 100 yds today.  I think it is a keeper!

Does it have a set trigger and what is the brass looking thing under the forearm? Think I would keep that one too...

No set trigger at this time. I do have all the parts to add one if I wanted once I get some original SST screws.  The brass ‘plate’ must have been used for a palm rest I suspect. Right now there is a 3/8” hole in the thin brass all the way through to the barrel. I plan on turning a brass plug for it eventually.  I wasn’t sure how an old .22 long rifle barrel rechambered to 22 Hornet would shoot. Now that it has proven itself it will get more TLC.

Here is the forend.  To do what I was thinking I first need to make the hole more round.  Then I can turn a plug with a slight lip that fits from the inside.  Solder in place and round off the top of the plug to match the curve in the triangular plate.

Probably easier to must make a new brass plate, Jack!

I have a couple of .22 WCF small shank high wall barrels with mediocre bores, I should try them to see if any are good.  I've been thinking about lining one, have the liner already.  Just too many other things going on to do it!

I thought about just making a new plate.  Maybe I will give that a try first.

I would even up the dimensions of the diamond and fit an ebony inlay. That or a cameo profile of Harry Pope.

Too bad I can't buy some improved talent to do a fancy fix.

Yes some sort of inlay that will fill the diamond and eliminate the plate and screws completely would be a nice fix.

I will have to se what materials I have on hand or look for something appropriate.  Maybe some 24 carat gold plate.

Not perfect but it will do.  I am going to refinish both stocks next.

It will be easy to pull that one right out of a rack of highwalls at the range. Maybe you should have it engraved with your name and maybe with a "Presented to" and the year. Good for starting a conversation.

I am leaning towards finding a small hornet decal and decoupaging it on the brass plate.

Yeah, have it engraved, "presented to John Browning" and a date the coincides with it's build date! Smiley
