Old Peep Sight - Factory or Homemade?

I saw this peep sight on a 1915 Stevens for sale on GBroker.  Anyone recognize the maker?  Or is it a garage-made sight?

I know nothing about it, but seems like a manufactured item. I have had a couple of plinkers that I would have like having it on with a second screw in the elevation slot. That's because i like the sight on the little low-wall muskets that Winchester made and this is like them (sorta)

Looks well made, but not sure it was done by any major sight manufacturer.

Calledflyer,
Is this a pic of the Winchester sight you are referencing?

To me it looks more similar to the sight used on the Stevens 414,but it isn't the same sight.

that is the sight I like a lot. have had two of those rifles and the sights were all i needed. the one you showed us is, in a modest way similar. On a plinker it'd be a good sight.

Sureshot,

Yes, it is similar to the Stevens 414, which is a nice sight in itself.  This sight is a hard one to judge.  If it were only slightly simpler, I'd say it was homemade.  But this is really in-between.  Not plain enough to be a garage build, but not clearly a factory product.

I was hoping someone here would recognize it.

I'm seeing hints that make me think it's a stamped part. A flat blank with the inner flanges formed up. Areas of the edges appear to have 'break', where the material fractures after have ming been cleanly 'sheared' partially through.

If it were bent from angle stock the outer flange would be thinned out where it was stretched. Unless whoever did it peened it back and then cleaned it up with a file. Nice job if that's the case.

West,
I think you are right. It doesn't look easily formed from angle iron, some of the bends aren't quite right.

I don't have your eye for differentiating between the finer points of stamped metal or not, but overall I agree. It looks more professionally made, than cut at home.

I was hoping someone here would recognize the maker, but it looks like that's not happening just yet.

There was something called (IIRC) a "Wondersight" offered way back when that attached to a fixed sight revolver by one of the side-plate screws.  this one has kind of the look of that.

I've got one somewhere in my junk; I'll try to find it when I get time.

Bent Ramrod,

I looked, and someone bought the old stock from the orig. maker and is selling them on Ebay:    (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

They are similar, but probably much smaller, revolver size instead of rifle size.  Still an interesting idea.  I like when people keep the old techniques alive.

I'd like to get a similar sight to put on my vintage Hopkins 22.  Anyone know of a modern version of this sight?

I'm also searching on Evilbay and Gunbroker for a vintage one, but the pickings are slim.

That sight looks a whole lot like a sight that was made by a gunsmith from Fairmount , In. that was in bussiness in the 1880's to around ww1. I do not remember his name but he had a small catalog of parts for sale. The reference came from an uncle who was into local history and had one of the catalogs.

Interesting.  I did a search and a "Maxwell Smiley" of Fairmount, Indiana comes up in a 1938 edition of Amer. Rifleman, vol. 86, issue 11.  It comes up in the search, but I can't see the text so I don't know what the reference is.

Does that name ring a bell?
