And, if you manage to buy a barrel from them, post the info on the experience here.  The how to, how long, etc.

Not being negative; all I hear on here is from buyers that arrange to pick it up when they go to a match that the owner attends, or they have someone courier it, etc.  If there's a simple, straightforward way to get a barrel (call a number, or email, give a credit card #, and the barrel shows up x weeks later) it would be great information to have, and would probably enhance their US buyer business.

I can painlessly email or do a website order from Shilen, Douglas, Hart, Bartlein, Brux, Chandlyn, Green Mountain, Benchmark, Krieger, BRC, Pac-nor, as well as other less known makers.  I have never figured out how to do that with RKS, and would like to at some point.  The Canadian border shouldn't be that much of a barrier to get across!

I do understand that some high end craftsman are a bit different to do business with (like Harry Pope), but it makes it a lot easier if you don't have to be one of the insiders to just get a barrel.  Particularly when there's so many great makers out there that you can simply go to and get one.

I think I may have read somewhere he ships them out under the name "machined parts"? Not sure of this but I have always wanted to try a gain twist barrel myself.

Canadian RKS barrel blanks are classified as machined parts and are not a rifle barrel and are shipped without any problem to the USA.

Once the barrel blanks are profiled, threaded for a receiver, and chambered for a caliber then they are rifle barrels that have restrictions for transferring across the border unless you are a rifle manufacturing company with importation certifications.

Any buyers easily purchase a rifle blank and then have an American gunsmith do the profiling, barrel threading and chambering to convert it into an offical rifle barrel.

CPA Rifles have mounted RKS barrel blanks on their receivers after they profile it and chamber it.

I'm ordering a CPA Stevens 44 1/2 in .38-55. Barrel will be a Bartlien, 1:12 twist, 30" long.

It will take about 6-months. I the meantime a dumb question.
Those of you who use this brand barrel in .38-55, what size do you make your cast bullets? I know I can slug it when I get it. But if I need to get a new Saeco sizing die, that can take more time than expected. My current Saeco die is 0.376".

Thanks for any help!

Tom

In 2019 when the RKS clan last came to Spokane, Westerner and I both ordered barrels directly from Ron and he shipped them a couple of months later to Wes in Idaho no problems.

I have a Bartlien on something.  Several Kriegers I'm happy with ... but they're all high pressure jacketed bullet rifles.

Straight holes, properly rifled and lapped ...

Most of them stainless... but HP jacketed modern garbage...

Sizing die???

I'm just a DA when it comes to single shots...

Cast to fit ... = ... custom mold...

Or maybe that's just for tapered bullets for breech seating???

RKS barrels are NOT lapped because they have a continuous choke of .0004" from the breech to the muzzle which improves the accuracy of your cast bullets since gas cutting around the bullet cannot occur which can result in pressure variations or leading.

The RKS barrel rifling is done with precision machining with a single point cutter of 40 passess for each groove.

You  NEVER lap a RKS barrel or you destroy the choking enhancement of the barrel.

They are also the leaders in doing gain twist rifling which improves the life of high presure rifle barrels by 10 to 15% so the RKS barrels are highly used by F Class shooters as well.

You might want to look here at how many of the Top 50 Shot Cast Bullet Benchrest Shooters in the last 29 years used RKS barrels:

I have built three rifles with BRC barrels and all of them shoot well. One in 30 cal and the other two in 40. You can get a blank for I think 265.00. They machine and thread well.

In 2014 I went up to see Ron Smiths barrel making operation. Wonderful place to hang out if you like machine tools. Ron has so much stuff he don't even know what he has.  I was surprised when I noticed Ron is fond of horses.
