I have a low wall with a heavy Stevens Pope (post Pope serial number).  The 27 7/8" octagon barrel measures 1.259 at the action and 1.235 at the muzzle.  It shoots very well.  Not my offhand rifle though.

I shot it at the ISSA NW regional and the RKS bench match in Spokane last July but did not do as well as I should have.  I will be shooting it again at Tacoma in a couple of weeks if I can break away from my nursing duties after my wife’s open heart surgery.  She  is doing great and would probably like me to leave her be for a short time.

You and me both!  The good news is that she is ahead of schedule.  I should be able to spend a half day at Tacoma and be able to shoot the 50 shot CF match and the 10 shot 100yd .22 bench.

Thanks.  Her aortic valve had a congenital defect and doctors have been monitoring it for years and finally determined it needed replacement.  Kind of scary but the surgeon said if was a low risk operation but a fairly lengthy recovery.  Next Wednesday will be 6 weeks and she can lift 25 lbs instead of the current 10.  And she will be cleared to drive.  He said it takes  about a year for the sternum to reach 90% of pre surgery fusion.

Back to the low wall question…not many folks love their low walls more than I do, but the arrangement of the extractor is at best tricky and at worst frustrating to deal with. They aren’t as steady in position as other designs.  If I were to pick an action on which to build a very accurate 22, the low wall (sadly) would not be my first choice. 

My low wall is not the easiest to extract fired cases.  They would eject far enough to be easy to pick out but with a scope they are hard to reach.  At first I would raise the block to make it easier to grab but that caused the hammer to retract opening a hole for the case to fall into.  One case falls in and gets crushed enough for the rifle to function for months.  Don’t ask how I know.  A second one and it is time to disassemble the action. Now I use a 4 prong grabber to pluck it out.  I have a heavy barreled Ballard that gives the low wall a run for the money in the accuracy department.  It is better suited to .22 rf.  The low wall just looks cooler.  My next step is to fit it with a set trigger.  I am just waiting on a trigger adjustment screw.  I will probably not look for a low wall hammer with fly but just mill the 1/2 cock notch off a spare hammer I have.
