The size he lists is nominal, the actual size is 1 1/2 by 3/4. It would have saved me some money if he had listed the actual size

Oak 1x2s are what I made mine from and by lumber standards that's, what 3/4x1 1/2? I've never felt the need for them to be any larger.

My thinking was across the same lines as yours until I tried a true 1x2 set and at least with me it made a noticeable difference in stability Smiley

Jim,
I shoot off sticks more often than any other device lately, with OH and bench coming close second.  Like you, the carpenter's version of  a 1x2 technically a 3/4 x 1-1/2 if that, depending on where the wood comes from, struck me as a weak link in my setup.  My planer was down but never fear, I had a few milling machines to choose from so I started with rough sawn oak I had on hand, 2-1/4 x 4".  Used the table saw to get it closer and finished on the mill.  Makes a mess...  Mine turned out fairly well, heavier than I thought they'd be.  I capped them using some 1x2 rectanglar tubing so they could be hammered and I fabricated blades for the bottom but kept them at the regulation 3" long.  In damp or soft ground, that's the weak link now, they are heavy enough they tip over easy - need to be 6".  In hard dry ground, they aren't a problem as long as you remembered your hammer.
As for where to purchase such an animal, don't know, I wouldn't want to build and price them for the effort.  If you have a good friend with a planer, work out a deal and the rest should fall into place?

Hi GT,
You are spot on! Thank you so much for the comments and photos. I am thinking 30 inches OAL, what did you make yours?

Jim,
Because that ground is so far down there,  Wink I generally try to sit on a small folding stool, it's only about 6" tall but enough I can swing a leg around and get up on a knee.  My sticks are 46" plus the 3" of spikes so 49" overall.

I made my sticks for hunting so I tried to keep them light. The legs are near 3/4 inch square and are 1 meter long (39in). I put a sharpened piece of steel strap on each food that works quite well for a shot or few. Certainly not a BPCR comp set-up but works well if you are hiking around and easy to manage with a cord for a sling.

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.
