More about wind

In the May-June 1975 Handloader magazine, there is an article on shooting cast in the .22-250 by Carl Johnson.  He states that "shooting at the lower end of the velocity range, the .22-250 gave good groups at 50yds. and sometimes at 100yds if a fairly strong steady wind was blowing".
He goes on to say..." Contrary to common belief, but as any bench rest competitor will tell you, the "best possible conditions" arn't during a calm day.  A little wind will do wonders for the apparent accuracy of a load, providing you shoot when the wind is coming from the same direction and with about the same intensity."
I have never heard of this before..does a bullet need some resistance in the form of wind to "bite into" to keep on track?  Perhaps some of our experienced bench resters could comment?

You can more easily read the wind than the mirage.

On a calm day you have to read the mirage when there is no wind.

My highest score I shot was with a wind with the flags 30 degrees off the staff (1245/1250).

Never shot extremely well when no wind since where I come from that never occurs and I never developed my mirage reading skills.

What do you do when there is both mirage and wind?

A no-wind condition doesn't exist - it usually is a mess off switching winds from changing direction, almost impossible to read.   But it IS there.

What do you do when there is both mirage and wind?

When there is wind I mostly ignore the mirage because the wind intensity and direction changes will fine tune my calls considerably better than the mirage waves can.

However I do monitor the mirage since it will show a wind change is about to occur before the wind socks show the change.

I use different wind indicators for different intensity of winds.

Extreme to light winds - light nylon wind socks.
Slight wind - seismic ribbons
Trickle wind - cassette tape ribbons

When there is no wind there is slight shifts in mirage but they are so minor I have not figured out how much of an impact has occurred so I try to wait and always shoot on the same conditions instead of trying to adjust for the change.

Cassette tape..I never thought of that!  I even contemplated using one of those incense sticks for smoke..might even calm the nerves!

I also use the mag tape. It shows there is wind when everything else says there isnt.
