Oh No! not another High Wall

This followed me home from the Oregon Arms show.  A High Wall that has had the #3 weight barrel cut to 29 3/8" and rechambered from .22 lr to .22 Hornet.  The bore looks very good.  Grabbed a quick pic to post here.  It needs some cleanup and refinishing the receiver.  Now to find some ugly stocks to make Wes Turner happy.

Unlike last year when there was a plethora of High Walls including some nice collectible originals with DSTs, today there were only 2 that I could find.  This one for $1200 and another for $4000 that to me was twicw its value.  I did see a couple of low walls that were not anything special.  Lots of Ballards and Sharps though.  Marlinguy got a Hepburn that was an excellent deal.

Ballards may be weaker,

Yes, I saw Jack's purchase in person and it is a great High Wall!

I barely got down one row when I spotted a Hepburn Match A in a rack, with a 10x Litschert scope on it. Asked to look it over, and saw a hang tag that read $1500. Seller said, "Or best offer." so I offered $1300 and got it for $1350.
It's got a new full round heavy .25-20WCF barrel and other wise looks original and in pretty nice shape. Barrel has almost no finish and I'm guessing someone maybe cold blued it and that finish came off quickly. I'll remove the barrel and rust blue it, and leave it at that. Really doesn't need anything more.
Try to get a few pictures tomorrow to post.

That HW looks just fine the way it is.

I agree 100% with Wes. Leave that rifle alone!

There are a couple of finish issues that I will post photos of tomorrow on each side of the receiver.  One is a small patch where it looks like someone tested some cold blue.

The Marlin 1893 Safety I picked up recently had some small rust issues I cleaned up with some OOO steel wool, Balistol cold blue and fine oil. Rust spots are still visible on close inspection and the surfaces a little rough but the rifle still has a nice look. Biggest improvement I made though was cleaning up the mangled screw heads, almost every visible screw. I pounded the heads then recut the slots. Then filed and polished the heads before heat bluing them. Really made a significant difference in the overall look of the gun. Damaged screws are very annoying. Somehow I was distracted by nice colors on the action and did not notice the screws in the pictures I had...Angry

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

Should improve a lot once I spin the barrel off and rust blue it.

Good find Vall,
Lucky I just gave it a cursory look as I was doing my initial sweep. If I would have paid more attention I might have bought  it.  I am happy with my high wall but was hoping for a nice all original one with DSTs.  I had a fist full of cash too.  The best deal I got was the 11 high wall extractors for $25 and the 10 triggers the guy threw in with the rifle purchase.

Bpjack,

Like your high wall! It’s in much better shape than the one I picked up at Tulsa 5 years ago. The bore was about a 2 on a scale of 1-10. I bought a heavy barrel from this forum in 40-82 Crossno Sil, like new. It came with brass and dies. Left the original stocks on it, but refinished them. Polished the action and had Wyoming Armory do the color case. It was originally a set trigger and all I had to do was get the screw for it. Turned into a really nice and accurate rifle.

Nice looking wall.  I have a 40-65 barrel sitting here waiting to see what I am going to put it on.  It is a #4 weight.

I think my barrel was a number 4 also. It indexed perfectly, but had to relieve the flanges around the barrel. Mine is a flat sided high wall. The 40-65 is a great cartridge, I think you’ll like it.

Nice job on the Highwall. Interesting cartridge too. Where did you find the set trigger screw? I need one for a 73. I think they might be the same tiny screw.

Sorry, I don’t remember where I got it! 😂. Too many suns around the moon since then and I’m always looking for parts for something!
