FS: Smith & Mills 12" Metal Shaper

Last spring, I took possession of a Hendey 12" metal shaper so selling my older (ca. 1915) recently rebuilt Smith & Mills 12" metal shaper. If I had more room, I'd be keeping this one after all the work I put into it. It runs well... Thought I'd list it here for the gunsmith types here - pretty handy for broaching type work. Dayton 2 hp 120 vac motor w/ Borg-Warner T96. Vise not included. Asking $1500 or possible trades for interesting old firearms or machinery.

Still has the original cone-pulley if one wants to power it that way as well. Has the original lantern style toolholder and a newly fabbed broaching bar I machined for it. Comes with a roll around dolley I made for it.

Located in Boise, ID. I can probably arrange for a forklift to load onto your trailer or truck. Weighs around 1500 lbs.

PM or email for more info...

Thanks again,
Jeff P

If I only had the room for it but alas, I don't. I can only dream.

I ran a little earlier S&M 16 or 18" for many years - I converted it from line shaft. Bought it for scrap price - was a good old machine. Wish I still had it.

Just this week sold my little 8 inch Shape Rite.  Actually, probably would have used a bigger one more than I did this one.

This S&M 12" surprised me the first time I put it to work after rebuilding it... had it flatten a chunk of steel I had... was under .0005" difference on each end. I made a classic Moltrecht shear bit and it makes some nice whispy curled swarf...

I'd always wanted an Hendey 12" metal shaper, so when one came up I grabbed it. Really only have room for one though, so I need to find this baby a new home.

Note the open "hole" under the ram, I figure this might come in handy for cutting Rigby type barrel flats. Never got that far with it yet however. I may regret selling it, because of this. The Hendey is not open at all, thinking mainly because it has the auto-downfeed mechanics on the ram.

FYI - if you watch some of the Los Alamos atomic bomb building videos on YouTube, you can see the Hendey metal shapers at work!

Cheers,
Jeff P

I’d really like to add that to the stable, but there are 3 hurdles to overcome…

1- no room in the shop
2- too far away
3- no extra $1500 I can get out from under the nose of the Minister of Finance Grin

That’s a real nice machine.  My 8” G&E runs out of space sometimes.  A larger machine would be nice.

I'd be willing to load this shaper onto a pallet if that helps for shipping. I have a steel framed pallet that I think will work...

Just throwing this idea out there... Smiley

If I were a younger man I’d be driving to Idaho to pick it up. They are great tools.

As stated above, I don't have the original vise for this shaper, however I did find someone over in Rochester NY area that has the exact as issued vise. Last time I checked he still had it...  I can pass on that info to the buyer as well.
