Well if you have the broke stock, that is your pattern. A tracing of it on your desired blank, band it saw out and start removing wood. Its really that simple.

I don't have the gun, I did my own from Rodney's castings and made the stocks by eyeball. The guy who has the rifle will most likely do just as you suggest, but hope springs eternal I guess

The stock issue is the main reason I don't build another 77. I did one about 30ish years ago from Rodney's castings but had it stocked by Long Valley Carving in Montana. The guys was named Paul. Can't remember his last name. Maybe some of you folks remember him or his business. He did an excellent job but it took forever. He promised four to six weeks but it turned into almost three months. Would do another if I could get it stocked. With me the placing of the back action lock is the problem.

I will pass that on to the fellow with the injured Sharps, and yes, I had a lot of time invested in getting that sidelock in the right place when I stocked my build, it's fiddly and you have to avoid removing too much wood.

Thanks!

Lock position is an interesting problem.  Tony Maddox talked me into a 77 casting set and have been working on it a little.  Been thinking about a partial mockup, before actually stocking the action, in order to get the lock position correct, but since I hate practice probably will just go for it. Had a crazy fleeting thought to do something different and make it an island lock but, like I said it was fleeting. Smiley

I don't think there's a finer looking Creedmoor rifle than 1877 Sharps with the long slender barrels and the thin forearms.  Shiloh rifles are nice, but the heavy barrels and the thick forearms just don't do it for me. The Axtells were probably the most beautiful reproductions out there.

When I built my first muzzle loader, I chose the Hawken rifle.  It was a lot of pain and anguish trying to decide where to inlet the lock so that the hammer would come down correctly on top of the cap.

Interesting you say this.  The barrel going on this gun is out of his shop.  Tony ended up with several from Axtell’s wife.  34 inches long.

I’ve built a dozen or so flintlocks and percussions so I don’t understand why this one should bother me, but it does! Cheesy

Hi Bob, do you have a link to any of your builds? You do very nice work and it would be nice to pick up some tips.
Cheers Richard

That's going to make a nice looking rifle, Bob.  The barrel is probably a Badger as Carmen was working with Ernie right up until the time she closed the shop around 2008-2009. I used to see her at the Quigley quite often but haven't seen her now in some years. She was there selling off a few guns and sights on Trader's row for about five years after they closed.
