Here is a Niedner barreled 414 Stevens that showed up in my LGS for sale. It has the Malden, Mass address on it and a very dirty bore. A pricey 414 for sure, is the Niedner barrel really a big deal?

Stamp looks identical to me.

Sorry, I couldn’t get my phone camera to focus any better on it. I can say, it is identical markings to the example shown. They want $2500 for it seems like a lot for a 22 cal 414 no matter who touched it.

I have a Neidner Ballard, barrel stamped Neidner Rifle Corporation, Dowagiac, Michigan. I believe it is a very late gun. It shoots very well, will hold to MOA at 200 yards.

What is stamped on the  underside of the barrel? Your barrel was made 1930 - 1940. Underside should have a number between 745 - 1744. There should also be a CB, OB OR E.R. Stahl.  How about some pics of your Ballard.

"It was a practice in Dowagiac that the man doing the rifling would also put his name or initial next to the barrel number."
-- Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century, Michael Petrov

Most, but not all, Malden barrels were numbered. They will be under the number 300. Unless it is AON, there shouldn't be any initials on a Malden made barrel. No one knows the whereabouts of Mr. Niedner's barrel book. Petrov was never able to get it. It was rumoured to be among Jake Simmons items.

That is a big premium for Niedner's barrel on a Stevens 414, especially one with a very dirty bore. I would make sure that bore cleans up before spending any more time on the rifle. If the shop owner doesn't push a few patches down the bore, its a big risk and more like a red flag.

When it comes to rifles with known barrel maker barrels, I put roughly 1/3 of the value on the barrel. (That was also Petrov's rule-of-thumb)

As for the A.O.N. stamp, there were a few different ones used. Here is a MALDEN MASS stamp on a case forming and bullet seating tool ...

Yes, if it has a mint bore.
