Lyman Super Targetspot, stuck ao

Tried a search but didn't find help.  The AO bell is extremely stiff,  I can barely move it.  Lock ring is removed.  Any advice on how to free it up??

I'm assuming it is old gunked lube in there.

Try heating with a blow dryer.

Be leery of applying penetrating oil to the threads to loosen them up. I always feared the stuff migrating onto the lenses. That said, I've used small drops of lighter fluid as a thread un-locker on scopes and a couple old Leica camera lenses that were bound up from stiffened lubes. That is not a sound professional recommendation - do so at your own risk.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Whatever you do to get it loosened, be sure to completely remove it once it's loose and clean the threads inside and out with alcohol before reassembling it.
It may take some lubricant if nothing else works, but if you clean it thoroughly after breaking it free it wont have a chance to migrate.

If it is tight in both directions then something is in the threads and have gummed things up. If its tight just trying to unscrew it, there is a chance that the lens holder has either shifted or was not lined up with the guide pin and causing problems. If you can remove the lens holder then its an issue with the threads.  There is a very small pin like protrusion that keeps the lens holder from turning and you need to be careful when putting that back in so it is aligned correctly.

No oil, never. BIll Ackerman ( Optical Services ) and the Texas Weaver Scope guru wrote a small piece in ‘ Precision Shooting ‘ many years ago with one piece of advice. Never use any oil on scopes. It will migrate eventually to the glass and ruin your scope. I trust his advice.

Just a thought, solvent used to clean refrigerate system expansion valve screens is very quick drying and leaves zero residue. Nothing to migrate. I use it on many gun parts. You have to be quick as it evaporates rapidly. It is available from AC/Refr. Wholesale suppliers.

I have a couple plastic with rubber strap wrenches. Inexpensive off Amazon or eBay. Sold as pairs large and small. Smaller one will grab small, 12 g extended choke tubes example. They don’t mar and put a lot of torque on a barrel shape in the right direction

Worth a try, solvents would be my last choice. Odds are good the bell is sticky due dried grease not corrosion.

A few years back, pre-Covid, I tried shooting at 300 yards and screwed the focus (?) setting all the way to the end.  Now I cannot get it to move.  Which of the above solutions works best?

Heat should be the least invasive. I’d start with it before lube and only takes a few minutes to see if it works. If at end are you sure you didn’t get a cross thread?

Got it.  Dried lube? Dried something was in there in the fine threads.  Just had to turn it far enough that it cleared the stuff binding it.

This is a grease we use in vacuum system where out gassing is an issue (the grease does not vaporize).
