Barrel clamp or sled (Read 1066 times)

	My Remington Rolling Block has a Green Mountain heavy, full octagon barrel. Chambering is .38-55. I've tried heavy gasket material and also deer hide (not together) as the buffer material between the barrel and the clamp. But the clamp slowly creeps forward with each shot. The deer hide works marginally better. One shooter today had just a strip of target paper in between the two surfaces. Is there a better buffer material that I should try? Thanks! Tom

	I use a piece of bicycle inner tube.

	I'm not a complete idiot, some of my parts are missing.

	I get mine from the local bike shop; their used tubes just go into the trash, anyway. Cut across the tube they make great bands to hold mould blocks together, too! FCH

	For the many years that I have used a "sled" I have used strips of cardboard cut from cereal boxes. About an inch wide and just long enough to be grabbed by the sled clamps. Round or octagon barrels, works great. Had a physicist tell me one time that the grip between cardboard and the steel barrel is VERY slip resistant. I cut a number of those strips and used each for a couple of shooting sessions then toss them for a new one.

	Given, I just built mine, but I wrapped the contact points of my sled with thick electrical tape and it doesn't move

	Like Randy, I use cardboard. I cut mine from the back of notepaper pads…..its a little thicker than cereal box cardboard. I dont think you will be happy with the electrical tape. I’d be really surprised if it doesn't slip.

	Plain old sandbag has worked extremely well for me over the years. Never bothered with a sled.

Guess I should clarify, from my days in construction, we had 2 grades of electrical tape: cheap tape, and expensive tape. Most people get the cheap stuff, which would not work. The stuff that is $6-$10 per roll is much thicker, and is almost rubber. That's the stuff I'm using. I've shot on the sled 4-5 times since building, and it hasn't moved yet. I may end up with the in er tube, but just used what I had on hand to start with

	I've been threatening to give old fashioned cloth backed friction tape a whirl. You know, the gummy thick nasty stuff that our Gramps and Dads had in the bottom of their rusty tool boxes, the stuff they used to bind up a hole in the washing machine hose or a leaky radiator hose in the Ford in order to make it home from church. Slapdash attempts to find The Real McCoy haven't turned any up yet.

	Friction tape generally only sticks best to itself, unless you can get a wrap it may not hold well. Hockey tape might be better choice.
