Lower was well known as a gun dealer in Denver, and partnered with the Freund Bros. prior to buying their shop out later. He also went together with Carlos Gove to buy a large lot of Sharps A rifles when Sharps was assembling the rifles from parts and selling them for half price. Although Lower's part in the purchase was miniscule compared to Gove's part that was about 10x what Lower bought.
I didn't realize Lower was a "master gunsmith", as all I've ever heard about him was his time as a dealer in Denver. Pretty nice biography on him.

Lower would probably keel over if he knew what those bullet boards were worth today!

David Lanara's book "67 Years In The Gun Trade" a biography of JP lower is only $20 on Amazon. No idea how good it is, but for $20 I'm ordering a copy to have.

Most likely it’s an oxen team, maybe pulling a wagon.

VIA the Denver Public Library. Credit where credit is due! Perhaps Gerald did so in his bibliography?

Nah, it says January 2nd. That was a real warm day. Denver only got 5.7 inches of snow that month.
