Interesting Stevens 414

A friend of mine inherited an interesting Stevens Rifle.  With my limited knowledge, I identified it as a 414 Armory Model.  It appears to fit the description of Grant's book on page 102.
It has an unmarked scope with a mount marked "Mossberg No.7 Scope Mount".
Also a wind gauge front sight and vernier rear tang sight.
There is a plaque on the left side of the forearm stating "Presented to the Essex School of Musketry by Wm. A. Smith Jan. 1918.
It is in .22 Long Rifle.  The barrel is marked "J. Stevens Arms Co. , Chicopee Falls, Mass. U.S.A. (in two lines).
I removed to forearm and the front of the receiver is marked with a large "S" and an "O".
It is in excellent condition with a bright bore. My friend says it shoots great.
I have attached a few photos. Can anyone identify the Essex School of Musketry?
Any input on the rifle?
Many thanks,
Mike.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

If this is the School of Musketry based in Essex, England I'd expect the gun's barrel to also have some British proof marks on the barrel? I believe the school ended about the time of WWI.

Either that or someone swapped mounts around.

The owner did say it shot better with the peep sights Undecided
I’ll have to investigate that.

Good observation.  I looked all over the barrel and action for markings and didn’t see any British proof marks. There was a proof style mark on the barrel and receiver that might show in the one photo, but it looks like a makers proof.
I’ll try to upload a better picture.

Yes, Sir!
Reversed the scope and tightened the mounting blocks and all better. Smiley
I'm guessing the loose blocks may have been the accuracy issue.
The scope was likely returned in haste w/o regard to placement.
The scope is actually very clear and the cross hairs intact.
