Likely a .33-40 or .33-47 that many were done from .32-40's after rifling became weaker. It's an easy cartridge to load and shoot with, especially if used as a breech seated bullet.
Best to begin by making up a .32-40 case with a few grains of fast pistol or shotgun powder, then filled with Cream of Wheat, and a wax plug over the end. Then fire form it, and check the dimensions to see if they still fall within .32-40 specs, or if the chamber was also increased in size.
Once you've determined the chamber you can simply make up a bunch more of the cases by fire forming and you'll have good cases. I have a Hepburn in .32-40, but rifling recut to .33 caliber, and I shoot a modified Saeco 740 mold bullet breech seated with a charged case behind it. The cases never see a reloading die as they never need anything more than cleaning, and new primers installed.

marlinguy.
case came out still same as 32-40.  so I guess I have a 33-40.
which I have not 1 thing in that cal.    my cpa 32-40 cases have never seen inside a sizing dye.  so this will get the same.  what size bullet would you suggest ?  will need a mold also.
thanks

Check the twist of your barrel also as that will determine how long of a bullet you can use.

I'm not a complete idiot, some of my parts are missing.

I'd try to get a .338" bullet, or at least a .338" base band. Since it's still a .32-40 chamber you'll likely have to shoot it as a breech seater as a .338" bullet wont chamber if the bullet is in a fixed cartridge. At least my Hepburn Match B wont let a bullet that large chamber.
I had the base band opened up on the Saeco 732 from a .323" to large enough to seal the grooves. It shoots extremely well breech seated.
Since my barrel is the original slower twist rate I shoot a 180 gr. bullet. I didn't even try any heavier bullets since it works so well.

A great source for a bullet mold would be Accurate Molds.  Once you determine the twist of your rifle (which I think  would be 1/16"), you can have a mold made to fit your chamber (probably around 205gr).
Fast turnaround and very fair prices.

When ordering from Accurate, I almost always do a 2-cavity with another custom size variation or style of bullet. Its just a few bucks more than a single. I just wish Tom would start making smaller metplats.

Same here. I love Tom's mold work, but never understood why his program wont make a smaller metplat?

I would have to assume, that if his program was capable, he would make use of it. He must be aware that many people wish that it ( the program) or he would do so, myself included.

Well that's obvious it's his program. Doesn't change the fact I wish his program would make a pointed bullet, or at least a smaller metplat.
I'd love to know the reason why, but as most of us know Tom is nearly deaf, so doesn't talk on the phone to answer these questions.

Send him a text or email. I'm sure he will provide an answer. Maybe not the one you would like.

When it comes to computer programs, nothing is obvious. Even to many who write the programs. And it may have nothing to do with the program itself.
