T-11 Target Scoring
Jun 7th, 2024 at 4:19pm
Print Post
Several years ago the new T-11 target for 100 yard bench rest for group.  We had some chat here at the time about how these should be shot and scored and it came down to a sort of "do your own thing" suggestion.  I'd kinda like to know how other SMs are using them on their home ranges and see whether we can reach a consensus.  I ordered a pkg of them when they first came out, but my shooters mostly look at them and ask what the heck do we do with them.

Can any of you give me any ideas of what you are doing locally?  My shooters love to shoot 22 BR for score, so I'd like to add an additional opportunity for them.

Thanks in Advance ~ Froggie

Very simple; measure the outside of the leaded edge of the group and subtract from that the groove diameter of rifle.

I would use the standard bore size of a .22 barrel .223.
Which is probably what Jeff means.

By subtracting the groove diameter of rifle you are going to get comments like my rifle has a groove diameter of .324 and another person will say mine is .326 or whatever. Now you have two targets with group sizes of .331, who wins.
So then do you have to slug both barrels to see who wins.
A real pain in the ass.
This did happen.

This is what the Benchrest guys use:
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

With the Neil Jones gage you center the hole with a circle on the template. This negates the need to know the bore/groove diameter.

BTW, Hey Marty, long time no see.

I didn’t make myself clear.  I know how to measure  the group size on one set of rings, buuut, how do you use all those Target rings?  Do you shoot 2 rounds on each and average the results, add the results, or???  Do you put 5 rounds on a single ring and get five scores for each target?  Do we have a standard established for this yet???

The upper left target is a sighter, put as many as you want on it.
Then you shoot 5 5-shot groups. Measure them all, add them together and divide by 5. The result will be the average group size.

Thanks Jeff.  That’s what I wanted to know.  The average of five, five shot groups.  I’m going to try to encourage folks to shoot this one this time.  I’ve got some really good 22 BR shooters that come to this shoot, and this should be a lot of fun for them.
Regards,
Froggie

Jeff,
Aren't the group scores listed for those matches held at Beeson's
scores for single groups - not 5 group averages?
Thanks, RayH

The "Kelly Match" is a 5-shot group match. The "Bartlet Match" shot at the summer match is 5 5-shot goups for average. It is plainly spelled out in the rule book.

I’ll always remember Dale Reynolds’ explanation about the difference between shooting bench for score vs bench for group.  He preferred to shoot groups, because as he said, “It takes two shots to mess up a group target.”  Think on that for a minute or two.  Wink

Yes! I have found that the group never gets any smaller after the second shot.  Smiley
