	Here are a few of the very early and unusual Remington rolling block sporting rifles. Made prior to the standardization of #1 sporting rifles in 1873. Marcot classified them as the 1870 series.

	That’s a great set of early sporting rifles Kenn. I especially like the one with the exaggerated crescent buttplate.

	Nice rifles Ken! I have an early round top with the deep crescent buttplate also. Mine is a .44 Long cartridge.

	Just made a deal to buy another early round top Sporting Rifle yesterday. A pretty unusual configuration with a full round 34" barrel and no rear barrel sight. Owner isn't much on guns, so couldn't give me any details on the cartridge other than to measure bore, rim, and base diameters with a dial caliper. So not positive on the cartridge until it arrives. All I could determine for sure is it's a very large cartridge, and centerfire, with a beautiful bore. Like most early round tops the images show at fairly plain stock and round nose forearm as early guns had. Asked to check for the usual cartridge marking, but he couldn't find anything? I figured at his low asking price I'd chance it regardless of the cartridge.

	The round top Rolling Block and Ballard #3 Gallery showed up, and the RB was a surprise. But since it was cheap I wont complain too much. Turned out the unknown cartridge is a 20 gauge! The shotgun is a full Sporting action with long lower tang, and sporting style buttstock. In pretty nice condition, and a perfect bore. Most of the barrel bluing still great. Pulled the buttstock to see matching numbers on the left tangs, but an unusual 44 stamped into the top tang recess in the buttstock? I've never seen a marking like that before in the wood?
