FS Ballard No. 8 32/40

Purchased this from a forum member because I was already paying to ship a walnut case to me so I told him to put a Ballard in it to make it worthwhile.

Standard Union Hill, great wood, still some color on action. Matching serial numbers. Fantastic bore. Set triggers work well. Stuck an Axtell sight on the front to make it a complete rifle.  Barrel has almost no finish left. Only flaw is the extra dovetail. I was going to have Curt Hardcastle make it disappear if I got it up and shooting.

The "extra dovetail" might have been a special order. I've seen Union Hill Ballards with factory rear dovetails before, although not a lot so a rare option.

Vall, could it have been an adjunct for mounting a long tubed scope - mounted via front sight dovetail and a special rear dovetail at a prescribed distance apart?

From the wear on the barrel I can see that the Rocky Mountain sight used to live in the rear dovetail which I believe to be original. It was in its current location when I purchased it.

Oh! I didn't even notice there were TWO rear dovetails! That does make it an extra.

Since there are two dovetails at the rear so close together I kinda doubt the extra would be for a scope. Most would simply use the front sight dovetail and the further back rear sight dovetail. At least that's how a few of mine are with old Stevens full length scope rings.

Not sure what happened, as I remember it had a price at first?
