30-30 Loads
Apr 2nd, 2024 at 11:23am
Print Post
I'm going to be shooting a 30-30 in a 28", 1-10" barrel.  Any suggestions on loads?  I just shoot smokeless.  I'm guessing 4227 and/or 4198 would be reasonable choices? The mold I have is an Accurate 31-165R and I cast with 20:1.
I assume a 30-30 would be good to 200yds?  Can I expect comparable accuracy to a 32-40?
Also, would accuracy with GC slugs be compromised if they are shot w/o the GC in place?
Any suggestions on a non-GC .30 cal. bullet mold that is available?
Sorry for all the questions; figured I'd get them all out there at one time  Tongue
Thanks!
Mike.

A excellent load for the 30/30 is 14.5 gr 4227, for PB bullets, either breech seated or fixed. It chrono at 1393 fps and had a extreme spread of 10 fps, F150 primers, BS in a 26" barrel. 184 gr tapered bullet, Savage 219 rifle.

In a Savage 340 bolt rifle, 22" bbl, I got 2131 fps, with the 311291GC  bullet, with 34 gr of surplus H380 powder and a 1 1/4" 100 yd group.

It should do well at 200 but, I've only shot it at 100.

Look on NOE's site for both PB and GC bullet molds. Bore riding PB bullets BS easy, in 20/1 and shoot well, if the nose is bore size and fits well.

What I use for Rifle Cartridge Cowboy Silhouette out to 200 meters in My Winchester 94 Centennial with any of 4 different cast bullets in the 170 grain range is 13.5 to 14 grains of 4227 (primarily 311041 and 14 grains).

My powder of choice for 30-30 is AA5744. I use it in my Winchester 94 with a 20" barrel for Metallic Silhouette out to 200 yards with a 173 gr. gas checked bullet (#311041). It's become my "magic fairy dust" of powders.

Around Dodge City and the territories out west, there's only one way to deal with the killers and the spoilers, and that's with a U.S. Marshall and the smell of...Gunsmoke.

I'm still using 4759 for my GC loads, 15.0gr. w/180 RN bullet. Been my go-to load for decades and thankfully I have enough of it to see me through to the end.

Lighter PB loads with 150-165 bullets I like 7.0gr. Unique. For PB backyard plinker loads I drop to 5gr. Red Dot and Lyman/Ideal 311241 155gr.

Please post any results you get with those gas checked bullets without the gas checks.

I have a highwall in 30-30 with a 1:10 twist 28" Douglas barrel and I've been shooting Hornady amax bullets in it with promising results.

I have cast some gas checked bullets to be shot without gas checks but I haven't figured out how I'm going to lube them yet Smiley

If you run them through a lubesizer you will just have a nice ring of lube around the base (might have the same with pan lube). Someone on the list has shown that the gas check ring disappears on firing giving a plain base. I have a friend who swears that it may shoot better than with the GC installed. I have a test ready to go.

I have been shooting my 32-40 Remington, 30" barrel, 8 twist,
on a Brg BPCR rifle with the Lyman 311299 w/o gas check.
I push down a 0.060" ldpe wad with the bullet as I seat it
over 15.5 gr IMR 4227. fixed.
Shoots well enough for this ol' guy.
So happens, the 32-40 Rem, is in fact a true .308 groove ctg
formed from R-P 303 Brit brass, has almost identical case capacity as  30-30 brass

Went to the range yesterday for some break in of my recently installed 32-40 Rem.  barrel. All I could get was a 1/10 twist so shot some jacketed 150's first
with IMR4198 cause I am waiting on an accurate mold that mimics the 311299 w/o gas check. I had some store bought but I need a .299 bore rider and these were .300 and would not chamber. After about 20 rounds of shoot and clean I went for group and at 100 yards I got a couple three shot clover leaf groups the best being .247 Can't wait to get my mold and cast some to see what they will do. Am going to try 4198 and 4227.

I shoot an NOE  314299 plainbase in  Ruger #1A in 7.62x39,it's a good design and accuracy is good considering the gun at about 1.5" at 100 yards .
