Has anyone else been noticing that Single Shot Rifles on Gun Broker seem to be selling low?

.....or not selling at all.  However, some I have watched seemed to be priced a bit high.  All of them not original, but very nice new-made ones.  (I'm not into antiques)

It's the economy and demographics I suspect.

Same can be said for the collector car market.  Been getting softer since last
spring.

Maybe a good time to buy?   Huh

I've collected and shot double barrel shotguns going on 40 years and the prices are eroding quickly. The exceptions are now extremely high grade or excellent documented providence shotguns. I wondering if it's changing time in our world:
1. The younger generation are into "Black Guns".
2. Recently attended seminar concerning the financial future of the next generation (our kids and grandchildren). The current projection is it will take approximately $ 250,000 per child for our grandchildren to attain a college education and between 2.5-3 million dollars for our kids to retire at our level of income.
I truly believe the financial burden with inflation and taxes is impacting peoples buying patterns.
Just my thoughts.

I don't see a lot of high condition original single shots being sold on GB to really say one way or the other. I do see a lot of single shots on GB that have been restored, modified, or just average condition, and those seem to be going for reasonably low prices, unless customized by big names.
The best old single shots seem to be sold at regular auction houses, and I don't see those going at any bargain prices; especially when you add in auction fees.

This is a very nice rifle, but I don't think most folks shooting single shots these days are interested in a rifle based on Hoch receiver nor a 30 Schwartz chambering. These two factors contributed to the low cost.

A new battery for my Jeep cost me 222.00 dollars recently. They offered an installment plan but I opted to pay the entire price all in one lump sum. I'm saving up for a new distributor now.

In a country that has more sheep than people, mutton and lamb is very expensive these days and primers have doubled in price.

I watched that Hoch-actioned rifle and was sorely tempted but in the end I view such devices as things I'd rather buy in person, not knowing who finished the action (if it originated in kit form) and how/if it was monkeyed with in the interim. I've heard mixed reviews about such Hoch actions to be a little wary in that regard - maybe (probably) unfounded but there it is. Wayne Schwartz had me about talked into a .30 Schwartz chamber "back in the day" and I've always thought it to be something I'd like to try.

In the end I think someone got a pretty good deal, probably.

As for the demographics in our game and soft prices on internet offerings I have to agree with previous statements. As for me, I'm still in buying mode and it suits me just fine - as I'm not yet in selling mode. Maybe prices will climb by the time I reach that point, maybe they won't - regardless at that point I'll be drooling in my oatmeal and won't much care!

We need to face facts.....we're a cult!

Cult: a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object. "the cult of Harry M. Pope" A relatively small group of people having peculiar beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or just plain weird. Old men and women who meet to shoot obsolete rifles in strange orthodox ways in an effort to evoke some sort of schuetzen mythology.  Huh

Lyman and Unertl scope prices seem higher on eBay these days.  I am done with auction rifles unless they go for less than what I would consider the action to be worth. I watch Winchester 1885 parts on eBay and they are going for more than they have been.

I've noticed the asking prices on single shots seems to be high at gun shows, but there is usually only 1 or 2 at the whole show.

We have our annual Single Shots and Single Actions show this Sunday at OAC. Guess we'll see how prices are.

The OAC 2 day show is my favorite. Last show I had a .22 heavy barreled Ballard and a sporterized 45-70 Borchart follow me home.  Both were lowball offers accepted by the same seller.

Both of those surprised me as I know the seller, and he's usually a bit high priced, and firm. You did great!

I will be using that Ballard at this years bench matches.  If I work out a lot more I might be able to shoot it offhand. —NOT!

In my first post I meant to imply that with prices going up in most things and wages staying the same or jobs harder to get along with redundancies some people are having trouble money wise and are putting off buying other than essentials like primers or powder.

Amen to that and let me also add that most auctions are now collecting sales tax which can add a pretty penny to the bill. Then add in the high cost of shipping and a thousand dollar bid can easily escalate to $1250-$1300 final cost. I know I calculate all those costs before I consider bidding. This affects sale prices.

I've been watching (not bidding) the weekend's Amoskeag Auction.  Lots of nice single shots.  The really high end stuff went for really high end prices. A Bullard single shot with a Farrow tang sight went for $18,000.

But most of the single shots, nice enough keepers, went for less than the low end of the auction estimate spread.

We're a bunch of obso-geezers with expensive toys that nobody else wants. When we're gone, what will become of all those High Walls and Ballards and Hepburns?

All the single shots had bids, even if they were bottom-feeders. There were some plastic pistols that nobody wanted.

Someone thought so, and I might suggest, didn't want to wait to pay more to have one built!

I wouldn't worry about any of it at this point. The jig is just about up. Chaos and anarchy will be here before November along with an economic collapse the likes the world has never seen before. Nobody is going to be paying attention to the price of single shot rifles anymore.

Not to mention the new red flag laws that have been rolled out. If the Government doesn't like you , you won't have any guns to play with.

I'm buying any the Best quality British falling block rifles for 30% of market value out of the kindness of my heart Grin Cash out now before the bottom falls out  Cool

I buy and sell way more British guns than American, the market for really good single shot rifles is very strong, surprisingly so I feel. Average stuff, not so much, weak demand and typical or even low prices.

Send me your Gibbs, your Hollands, Frasers and others while there is still time. I'm here to help  Grin

Hey Steve,

Count me in for any Alex. Henry, Daniel Fraser, George Gibbs, or Holland single shot rifles.

I'll guarantee you a nice profit.  You buy at 30% and sell to me at 50%.

Deal, eh?
