There is a good book (if I do say so myself) on loading and shooting paper patched bullets. Much of the info for loading paper patched bullets is specifically for the 45-70.
The book is:

It's available from:

blackpowderspg.com

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

W-W cases, fired, unsized, cleaned, trimmed to no longer than 2.100”, Federal Match Large Pistol primers, primer wad punched from ASSRA target paper by the primer in the pocket.

80 gr Swiss 1F or 1-1/2F, trickled through 24” drop tube, 1/16” cork wad, compression ~1/8”, Steve Brooks 540 gr, 0.443”, 16-1, Strathmore Tracing paper 0.0015”,wrapped twice around with 1/2 the bullet base uncovered.  I dust the inside mouth of the shell with a mixture of 1 tin of Imperial Graphite to 1 can of Midway Mica (to lubricate the shell and keep the friction from the paper from lengthening the shells), and a slight mouth reduction, just enough to keep the bullet from falling out.

May or may not work for you, but it works pretty good for me.

Ditto what Bent ramrod said except I use 83 gns of Swiss 1 1/2. It was good enough to take 4th place overall and 3rd place at the 1000 yard at the Creedmore 150 a couple of years ago in Oak Ridge. I’m 85, old guys rule lol.

All I can add to what’s been said in the last two posts is, use a bullet/paper combination that’s a good fit in your barrel. I like it to feel snug but not tight when pushed into the chamber.
Fouling control is very important with PP. I’ve found bore pigs to work the best.

I also give the cases a mild mouth anneal after every firing.

RSW's paper patch book is probably the best one out there.
Having said that the chamber on your rifle will make quite a bit of difference on bullet diameter and paper.
In my Shiloh, the BACO .446255 bullet cast from 16-1 and wrapped in seth cole 7 lb paper, with the patch 7/8 inch wide, Hornady component cases sized and expanded with a .451 expanding die primed with RP 9 1/2, 75 grains of OE 2f. Thin napa rubber cork gasket on the powder and a Muzzle loader original dry lubed felt wad  under the bullet with the bullet seated just deep enough to engage the leading edge of the patch, with no crimp.
Wipe between shots with the BACO bore wipe system, felts wet with Napa cutting oil/water mix 1-7, followed by a 2 1/2 inch flannel patch.

I've been searching for this question/answer for a few days now. Glad to see it wasn't very far to find here in the forum.
Will order your book the 1st of the month.

I have two new builds I'll start then as well, 1. a- 45-70.
2. a 45-90

Looking forward to reading this.

On top of the powder I seat a milk carton wad, then a disc (0.250-0.300") disc of lubricant, I use PPB.s for hunting so I don't want to tie myself to swabbing the bore after everyshot. On top of the lube I put in another card disc with a disc of wax paper. The wax paper ensures the card does not stick in the base of the bullet when it exits the muzzle. I also lube the paper patch by hand prior to loading. It helps to get the cartridge chambered and paper is very abrasive to the inside of the barrel

Do you find the accuracy of PP better than grease bullets?  I would suppose so but by how much?

I do find the accuracy better in most of my rifles, a couple of them just don't seem to care much for it.
I also find shooting paper patch more satisfying than shooting greasers.
The finest accuracy with paper patch takes a little bit more experimenting than with greasers. So it boils down to whether one wants to spend a lot of time with it or not.

No. Probably no better accuracy. But paper patchers get all the prettiest girls.

I find the accuracy to be about equal with significantly less effort involved for the GGB's but I would rather shoot PPB's Grin
