Cast Bullet Loads for .32 Win Special in Hi-Wall

Old time shooter, new to forum. Am in the process of looking for an 1885 High-Wall replacement barrel in .32 Win Special. Already removed the splendid-condition original .32-40/ 30"/ Full Octagon .32-40/ #4 profile -- and am considering a new (or if there is such a thing) or used .32 Special in a lighter profile. Now the question: Can I use the same Ideal Moulds that came with this rifle/barrel to load .32 Win Special? -- #319288 and/or #308334. I have not cast with these yet as I have no cases (and actually, no barrel yet). Thanks.

My heavy half-octagon .32 Spl Highwall barrel was rechambered from .32-40 (can still see the slight taper at the mouth of the shells) and refitted to a Stevens #45 action.

Loads I’ve used are 15-16 gr SR-4759 with the Ideal 319323 or 319273.  Another that worked well was the 321297GC with 16 gr of MP-5744 or 16.5 gr 4198. With the 319247 I could get up to 18.5 gr of H-4198.

If you’re talking about an original Highwall barrel in .32 Special, good luck on your journey.  All of the takeoffs I’ve seen in .32 caliber are .32-40; I’ve never seen an original barrel, in any condition, on or off a rifle, in .32 Special.

If you just want readily available cases, the .30-30 range pickups can be resized to .32-40 if you have the sizing die and a heavy-duty reloading press.  They come up a little short but are eminently usable.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Whether you can use the same molds and bullets depends more on the groove diameter of the two barrels than the .32-40 compared to .32 Win. Spl.
If both bores have the same groove diameter, and similar twist rates, then what works in one should work in the other. Especially if you're handloading cartridges and you work up what's the most accurate load for the new barrel.
I'd suggest measuring a bullet as cast diameter, and then making sure the new barrel has a suitable groove diameter to fit the existing bullet diameter.
