Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Unique is one of the oldest powders still being sold today. As my old friend used to say, "Heck, I think Moses loaded with Unique!"
It was one of the first powders I used for handguns, and reduced loads in old BP cartridges. Still use it for some handgun loads, but haven't loaded a rifle case with it in a long time.

How does one stalk a good low-vel cast bullet load for a centerfire cartridge?

Unique up on it.

A suggestion about shooting low pressure loads in rimless cases; drilling the flashhole out to say 7/64 or 1/8 inch will stop the danger of induced headspace.

It's just the firing pin driving the case.

Not so.  It's the explosion of the primer that drives the case forward.  The energy of the firing pin crushing the primer is microscopic by comparison.   You could test this by deadening a few primers.

Absolutely incorrect, take a case and fire it multiple times with an empty primer and then put it in a head space guage. You will notice the headspace increasing every couple of shots.
I've done it many times.

I did the experiments when I was shooting .35 Remington, which has almost no shoulder at all.  How you got that result is a mystery.  The first strike crushes the primer cup.  Subsequent strikes hit nothing, since the primer is already dented.

If I remember correctly the 200 yard 330 gr bullet 45/70 load I used was 8.4 w231. Considering powder burn rate about the same as 10 gr unique.

Unque not limited to gallery loads. However I go to 4227 or my old supply of 4759 longer distances in bottle necked 30/30 or 30/06 or straight 32/40 & 38/55

mine were tested in 35 Whelen and 30-06.
Both on Ruger #1 actions.
