Refinishing the Falling Block Works action..

I’m looking at a FBW action for a build I’ve had on my mind. It’s original blue. 80 percent. But, I’m difficult. I’d like to either reblue tt or get it case hardened. The problem is I see an awful lot of bronze colored following black works actions. Has anybody successfully re-blued or case colored one? Thanks in advance.

I should think that rust bluing it would avoid the dreaded plum color induced by hot salts bluing.

Interesting. I didn’t realize that was a deciding factor. I’d really like to case color it

I did one rust bluing on a FBW, did a thread on it here:

I think the steel has too much carbon to safely case color it.

Either way, take the time to flatten out the surfaces, square the corners, debur the sharp edges, etc before you do any blue or case color.  The FBW were inexpensive and utilitarian, but they were not finished well.  They can be fixed up quite a bit with a few hours of stoning and wet/dry sandpaper finishing.

I don’t know how “tight” a FWB action is but, I won’t touch a “Re-cased” Parker Shotgun. They are full of parts closely fitted. Every one I have ever picked up off sale tables at Vintage shoots feels off opening closing & locking  compared to untouched action’s. My more experienced friends have the same opinion

Can’t imagine how actions can be heated to re-case without dimensions changing however slight.

Annealing, temperature control and water temp and correctly blocking the action…
