Little sewer pipe that could

Print Post
A few years ago I won a Maynard rifle at auction. The bore looks like a sewer pipe. Been messing around with it the last few weeks before winter sets in. We've been having fine weather. The more I shoot this rifle the better it shoots. Finally got a decent group out of it yesterday. When I started the rifle would make six inch groups at a hundred yards. Not going to monkey with it any more.
32-35, 192gr Pope style tapered bullet at groove diameter. 12 gr LilGun, breech seated with a plugged case. IS at 100 yards. The pinwheel was the first shot.

Aye Joe,

Nice sewer pipe! I once bought a trashed Winder Musket in 22 Short, the barrel looked awful, however it seemed to shoot reasonably well which surprised me. After shooting and cleaning it for a while it started looking better and better. What I had thought was rust and pitting was actually very hard old oil turned to varnish, the bore turned out to be perfect.

Wished it was dried up oil in this one, Bob.
Thought for sure I'd have to replace the barrel or line it. It was originally 32-20 with a 16 twist at .318 groove diameter. An odd one. Struggled along with it but got nowhere. Trying to get enough velocity with a heavy bullet resulted in to much pressure and the shells stuck in the rough chamber. Re-chambered to 32-35 with a reamer from a forum member. The plan was to lap the bore if everything else failed. And if that didn't work, put a liner in it.  Now when I'm gone and the next owner has it he'll look in the barrel and say, what a sewer pipe! That thing will never shoot!  Grin  I could use some more shells....

That's pretty impressive.  Today I was playing with a rifle that has a brand new bore and it didn't shoot even close to that good Smiley

Glad you were able to get it to shoot pretty good Joe. Very pretty rifle too.

That is awesome! I would be interested in seeing some of the velocities and loads with Lil’Gun. I too, am playing with a 32/35 Stevens and don't know where to start with Lil’Gun. It seems to do best around 1400Fps.

Vall, when you look in the bore and then look at the target it just doesn't add up, but there it is.

All along I've been telling my shooting buddy here in town that I'm making progress and it's shooting better and he rolls his eyes. It was a treat to show him the target this morning at coffee.

12 grains of LilGun under the 192 grain bullet show no signs of excessive pressure. Don't plan on increasing it however. It feels a little stiff but it is a light rifle. Win LR primer.

If the weather is good tomorrow I might get a velocity off a buddies bullet tachometer.

That almost looks like carbon buildup. I'm still trying to remove a bunch in a 222 I picked up. Didn't look like it had been cleaned since new in '52. Already gone through a bag of patches & it still persists. Can't complain about how it shoots any more though  Smiley

It's sorta like looking down on a planet or moon as you orbit where you can't tell the craters from the mountains. I have done that a few times. I think what it really is, is a lack of carbon. AKA, serious patina.
Some may even call it rust, or rust pockets.  Sad

They are now lube retention centers.  Smiley
