Pet Load Vihtavuori 45-70?

I have a hunter in my shooting club that wants me to load some 300gr Sierra HP/FN for his Pedersoli lever action. He is intending to shoot Roe deer with it. Anyone have a pet load using Vihtavuori powder?

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

I was hoping someone had a little personal experience...

My personal experience is when not using Swiss BP:

Lyman 457658      490 grains      XMP5744      24.6 grains      1186 fps Win. primer      Federal case F.L. sized Lee Factory Crimp

Very few people using VV in a .45-70.

I have some Lovex D060, it is supposed to be very close to 5744. I may give that a try rather than buy $150 worth of Vihtavuori N130 (2.2lbs)....

Or perhaps I buy the N130 and have powder for my 8x48R Sauer, been loading it with N140.

I’d be more concerned about the bullet in use rather than a powder load, plenty of data in that regard. If the hunter wishes to have meat to eat another bullet may be a better choice; for that matter the cartridge choice as well. 45-70’s loaded with the Sierra 300 are borderline varmint type bullets, they are very destructive. Around here on whitetail deer the Remington 405 soft points work and even those will destroy a lot of meat if bones are struck. If I had to choose a load for the Sierra 300 it would be 12-14 grains of Unique in hopes of keeping the velocity down to a lesser destructive level. For my money on this small of a deer my load would be the old Lyman 325 grain hollow point at 1200fps.

All points to consider. I'll have to talk with the hunter but, I think his rational is a big hole through the lungs. German hunters at taught to take the "BlattSchuess" (broadside through the lungs) as the ideal shot.

I killed three bison on the Armendaris ranch in the early 2000's. All one-shot kills with a 50-70 (425gr lead bullet over BP). In every instance the "guide" wanted me to shoot for the heart. My rifle is/was a rebuilt Remington roller with iron sights. I agreed but knowing I would go for the lungs. Worked in 1870 could not reason it would not work now. IN one case the guide called the base and told them I had "lunged" one as though that was a bad thing. The bull ran about 15 yards and then blew blood for about 30 seconds before tipping over.
