.25-21 Stevens

I have a Stevens 044 1/2 in .25-21.  I have a newer barrel for it that with a 1:10 twist.  I took it out today and was shooting a Brooks 118 spitzer (30:1) and 7.8 gr of 4227.

The bullets are tipping a lot (see photos below).

I got two different recommendations to eliminate the tipping: Up the charge 2 tenths to 8 gr. or shoot it with up to 10 grains.

At this point all I'm looking to do is eliminate the tipping.  I need to shoot the gun on Thursday (10/19) in a match.  I don't expect to be in the money - it will be mostly a morning of off-hand practice - but it would be nice to turn in targets with nice holes in them.

Suggestions?

I don't mind the tipping if the groups are good.  In this case, the shots were all over the paper.  Much worse than my usual off-hand work.

Maybe they'll behave better if I eliminate the tipping.

Ron Welch told me that he had to run the .25's at least 1600 FPS in the fast twist barrels.  Don't really know how much 4227 it takes to get there.

Different cartridge, but my 25-35, on a martini cadet, was doing much the same so I lowered the bullet weight to 87grains and upped the powder charge and it shot clover leaf groups after. I’ve actually hunted with it and taken a deer and several goats

Not clear - is the barrel you're shooting 1:10, or is it an original Stevens which was 1:14?

Shouldn't have to ask, but is the crown OK?

He said he HAS a 1:10 barrel, but not that he has it installed on the rifle.   OK, call me a grammar-Nazi........ Roll Eyes

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I had a Stevens 49 in .25-21 and my loads were 104 gr. bullet at 1400 fps, with no tipping and good accuracy.
