Looking at an H&R single shot in 44 smooth bore.  1901-1902 vintage.

I've heard someone say it's 44XL, chamber is longer than a 44-40.  Any loading hints?  Shot or round ball(s).

For what it's worth, most, maybe all, of the examples I've seen were shot. All of the ones I have are, for sure. Paper shot cup that is breaking on most of 'em.

agree, one of the better of the 2 or 3 articles I've seen.

It seems that there were about 4 or more different 44 caliber shot shells about that time.

I'm planning on using 444 brass; maybe with the Speer shot cases (plastic) may be not.

Brought it home.  Bore ok, some minor pitting just ahead of the chamber, front part like a mirror.

Chamber appears to be just shy of 3" long.  Short forcing cone.

Brass?  Hmm.  .444 chambers, .405 Win chambers but is a little large at the mouth to go all the way in.  9.3x74R chambers.

Of the 3 the 9.3x74R has the largest base diameter and largest rim diameter; AND is available.  Will be making the brass shot shells from them soon.

double gas checks(with shot between)  work for shot loads.you have to experiment with the GC diameters and old lyman non crimp work better than the flaired Hornady.
I used to make snake loads for my 45 Colt like that many years back.

45 Colt doesn't come close to being small enough to chamber.
