Interesting problem with Lee 3 die carbide set

So I was whipping along with my 32 S&W Longs and all of a sudden one new brass went in hard and on extraction the shellholder tore through the rim. Now the shellholder that comes with the set is a little generous in dimensions and quite a bit more so than the equivalent RCBS shellholder but even the RCBS might have just taken a bigger chunk of rim off. Lee quickly gave me nicely illustrated instructions in using a punch to drive the case out using the decapping rod and a heavy hammer. I had at it with a really heavy hammer and eventually out popped the case and the rod. But, the case was firmly gripping the rod, well look at the picture. I'm waiting to hear from Lee on that one.

find a nut that slips over the case but not the rim. Stand it up in your bench vise drip some kroil in it over night. then tap the pin with a BRASS hammer.

Looks like a good way to lengthen cases!  Wink

But it has those nice rings that someone else was wondering about in their brass;-) Anyway, Lee is right on top of responding to me. I sent the picture in yesterday afternoon and I have a response this morning that not only suggested how to remove the case but also said that the decapping pin is the wrong one for that set and should/will be replaced. Standing by for the next response.

That was quick, the Lee person just replied that the order has been submitted and is in the works. Yay! In the meanwhile, I ran the rest of my brass through the sizer without the decapping rod and all was well.

Annular clearance between that wrong decapping rod and the die was OK until you got a piece of brass that had walls thicker than the clearance.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I've had this happen before, but don't recall the cartridge? I took a file and clamped the rod and case in my vise and carefully filed the side of the case until it was very thin. Then clamped the rod in my wood vise to avoid damaging the rod, and used a small chisel on the rim to drive it off. The case usually cracks open on the filed area and then comes right off.

The correct decapping rod arrived today from Lee and there is no way this one will ever get stuck in the case!
