BSA .22 Martini action

I am bidding on a BSA Martini-type .22 with a tang sight. There is a large notch on the barrel for a missing rear sight. Assuming the barrel is up to serious competition, what would the hot stove league recommend in the way of optical sights for this rifle? It's a take down model, 33,000 range SN. What finish did this rifle carry new? Remember the black paint army surplus stores used to put on all manner of military equipment? That's what it has, flaking off in spots. Surely that's not the original finish. Haven't received it yet, so don't know if the receiver is steel or not. Blue? Parkerize? Appreciate any knowledge or suggestions.

The original finish is a dull blue not bead blasted but not a high polish either. The receiver is steel and being a take down it sounds like it might be a model 12

They were blued steel actions.
There were a number of different small model or Cadet actions.
There is also the BSA Martini International series of rifles.

Here is a link showing the Small Action Models:

The rifles frequently had either BSA or Parker Hale sights.

Thanks, Dave. It's indeed a Model 12, apparent production in the late twenties or early thirties. Hope the bore is good. Plenty of information in the second link.

I'm cleaning up one of those rifles as well.  I'm not a competition shooter, it will be just for fun.

Description said finish had lots of scratches.  Turns out this one was painted as well and the majority of those scratches are being removed with the paint.  Dull finish underneath but it is all black!

Had a rack number on the butt so I'm guessing it was a club rifle and got "refinished" a time or two while in that role.

A little acetone and 4/0 steel wool worked well on mine.  Neat little rifle (for a 10 pounder!)
